dear all,
we are staying in a basement which is having problematic plumbing all thro'out and also the water is leaking out of the bathroom into the area just outside,so the entire walls and the floor is full of fungal infestation.the owner used to collect the rent by telling that he will get it done as soon as he gets some time(always).since four months he has been collecting the rent without providing the basic facilities and now suddenly his uncouth wife is comming and telling with her uncontrolled tongue to vacate.in this situation are there any rights for us? if there is any organisation which deals with this,pl suggest and contact address and ph no.

Mostly your basement might not be legal. If your landowner is not giving you any reciept, you might not be able to do anything. If you are paying your rent by check than you might have some chances.

Municipality knows there are so many basements on rent - those are illegal, however they don't want to do anything about it, as it keeps the rents in check.

Better visit the site bison mentioned, get the phone numbers, call and you will have better picture.

sanvee000,
Do not wait to take action. evnthough you do not pay by cheque, the very fact you are staying there , and not own the house or related to the owners is proof of the fact that you are renting. Having seen the health effects of fungal infestations I advise you move out of the basement immediately .
Alternatively you can let the city know ( easy, go to the website , get the contact # and call ) . It is up to you.

I just read this. As Goldeneye suggested , move out asap.
Health is wealth.

I lived in a basement and while it was a newly contructed house and very clean and tidy, the pipeing made so much noise through out the day that I moved back into an apartment. The funniest part was We would sit at the dining table having our meals and there was a toilet right above and as people would flush we would hear it loud and clear. Made us laugh and cringe at the same time.

If you want you can try a clean basement in a newly constructed house (now you know what to look for), if you are not able to get an apartment for some reason.

Take the landlord to the tribunal. The tribunal does not care if the basement is legal or illegal . All it care wheter the landlord have violated tenancy laws.

You can find more info on
http://www.orht.gov.on.ca/scripts/index_.asp

Hello,

Similar to this, I have another question. We moved to an apartment and have been facing problems since day 1.

Before we moved, I checked apartment one day prior to make sure everything was done. But the kitchen was not cleaned to the extent that there were dead bugs in refrigerator. I complained to management and rental office but no body cared. Rather they were so rude.

Another issue : We have 4 phone points and 3 are not working. They said we should call bell and pay and get them fixed. i would assume as we just moved in we should get it in working condition and management should be paying bell. Am I right ? What can I do ? management office does not hear to complaints and do not really care. They just say, thats all we can do, sorry.

Small small things like washroom exhaust is not working properly, when we complained they say, you clean it then it would work but hellooo.....we just moved in, are we not supposed to get clean place ?

Please do not suggest to find another apartemnt, its not easy to move again and again.

Slowly I am having terrible experiences in various facets (I used to have in India) and seems like customer service is not really very great here too. And it is becoming very very frustrating.

Thanks
