Moving back to India
Hi guys,

I have been here in Canada for more than a year now as a PR with my wife & 2 kids.

If one wants to go back to India permanently without having any ties in Canada, what are the procedures one has to complete ?

Especially in

1. Income tax return filing - If one is leaving Canada in the middle of the year, what should one do about filing tax returns for that year? If we are eligible for income tax returns, how & when do we get it?
2. Any other procedures apart from informing health care, HRDC, etc.?

Thanks & regards.

Rajan.

Are you abandoning your PR or do you want to retain it for children's post-graduate education?

LD,

Will move next year, hopefully before the start of academic year in India.

Kids are small right now so for another 12-13 years, post-graduate education will not be a issue. Also having to stay 2 years in a 5 yr. time-frame will be a problem. Hence will not retain PR.

If it is written, kids can come back to study on student visa.

Thanks & rgds.

Rajan.

mpai64,

Still in Canada. Planning to come back next year.

Reasons for the decision to migrate back to India are :-

1. Lack of proper job opportunity. Although I am lucky to get an entry-level job in my field, I do not see much chance of progress. I have tried at so many places for getting a job. Most of the times you do not get called for an interview. The places where you get shortlisted, the salary raise offered is like around 25-50 cents an hour & that too is only an entry-level job.

Some friends tell me it is too early to get a decent job. But after more than 1 year of working in the same company, if you can't progress then either something is wrong with me or something is wrong elsewhere.

2. While I am able to meet my expenses & transfer money as well to my parents (from the child care benefit) in India, I do not see a significant change in my career which will boost my income. This, I say, based on my experience so far. I could be wrong or being pessimistic. Especially in the computer sales field, most of the things are available in India & the IT sector is also doing well in India.

3. Kids tend to spend more time in front of TV which tends to limit their development. While there are lots of activities in school & outside, one does not have the financial resources or proper time to take the kids out for such activities.
I appreciate the practical knowledge that the Canadian education provides but at the same time, my daughter in grade 1 in India used to know more maths than what she does in grade 3 here. My son aged 3 spends almost all his time in front of the TV except when he goes to pre-school which is twice a week. Whom does he play with? If he goes to play out, others in the apartment come to complain about the kids making noise. Keeping him in day-care is not feasible since it is expensive (around 550 dollars per month) which is like half the monthly salary. We did keep him in day-care for a couple of months while my wife was looking for a job, but he kept on falling sick. Naturally no company would allow you frequent leaves to take care of the kid.

Since the last 2 months, what we have done is that my wife works from 6 to 2 & I work from 3 to 9. On her weekly off days, I work full time. This is basically to take care of the increased expenses like pre-school fees of the kid & other expenses. Instead of one person working 8 hrs. a day, if 2 of us work 14 hrs. a day, then one can get more money. This way we do not need to keep my son in day-care.

4. My brother expired early this year in India. After that my parents feel very lonely. I cannot file for them right now since you require a minimum income in order to do that. Even after that it will take 3-4 years for them to come here. They can come here on visitor visa but that's very expensive if they have to come & go frequently. My father still works in India & so for him it would be difficult.

This factor is one of the most important in my decision.

5. Lots of positive articles about the progress being made by countries like China & India come in the press here. After coming here, I realised it more. Although a lot more needs to be done.

I know there are many people who are in more difficult situation than what I feel. I & my wife evaluated the pros & cons of our life in Canada & India & we feel that we were more happy in India.

I know of people who are doing very well in Canada as well. Some of them on this forum & lots of people who might not even know of Canadian Desi. Some people have been lucky to get good jobs in their field & some people have made it to a very good job in their field after struggling thro' security jobs, cleaning jobs, etc. (it is another matter though that such jobs offer more pay than what I get in computer sales).

This is my personal decision & should not demotivate you or others who want to migrate to Canada. Situation is difficult though. Come prepared with the option of having to do odd jobs throughout your life or change your field. You can update your qualifications after coming here which might help you get a better job in Canada. Mind you that studying is a expensive proposition here. You can get loans & grants etc. though in most courses.

Ofcourse, I still need a reply to my query in the main post. If anybody can let me know, it would be great.

Thanks & regards.

Rajan.

rajan, you have made a wise decision, hats off to you who value parents more than the materialistic life in Canada.

although u mentioned there are people who do well (immigrants) but all of us pay a heavy price and each of us know that. well it is diffirent for the next generation,w hen their parents have already suffered. I totally support you decision, although i do not see myself moving out of canada for bit but yes long term may be????

comign back to your tax questions, yes you have to file your final return. you will get your refund by direct deposit if you have given your bank account.

Hi to Rajanad and all CD members.
I agree with you and wish to share that I considered all your points before comeback to India after stayed for 14 months in Canada. I wish to know that what makes you to hurry to come back without applying for Citizenship.

After come back I feel that every points what you mentioned have more value when you have a good job either in Canada or in India.

Before move to Canada or India one should have a good job.

Awaiting your reply.
