how would you compare salary in US to that in Canada? For. E.g. if I am earning 50K / year in US, how much should I should be getting in Canada so that my take home salary remains same. I hear taxes / other expenses are high in canada.
The results shows that actually I should get a lower salary in Canada than I am getting in USA !!!!
Guys please, those who have immigrated from US to Canada, esp. in IT, can you provide me realistic comparision? It's really important for me to have this information.

This article describes the data on our site. Other information about our Salary Calculator and International Salary Calculator can be found on the FAQ page.
Much of the data on our site is collected specifically by our research staff. For example, the school data is obtained by our research department, which contacts thousands of local school officials. House prices, which are a critical factor in the cost of living indexes, are obtained by contacting thousands of local real estate professionals.
In addition to our own data collection efforts, we license data from companies that have a strong focus on data integrity.
For example, one of our main information sources is the Center for Mobility Resources, which has over ten years' experience in data collection and cost of living analysis. CMR's reference material is the definitive source of local cost of living information for libraries and many recruiting firms.
The demographic information on our Community Close-up consists mostly of estimates for 1999, which we updated on our site on December 24, 1999. However, the data on housing characteristics and educational attainment is 1990 census data, which has not been updated since.
The quality and integrity of our data means a lot to us. Whether the data is gathered by our research staff or obtained from another source, we go to considerable effort and expense to ensure accuracy and reliability.
I think it needs an update before one can make any decision.

Hi Picaso,
I was in US - Iowa before moving to Toronto.
For the same Gross Pay ($$), one has much less "personal disposable income" here in Canada. Income tax is of course higher - how much higher depends on which US state you are residing in.
The real killer is not only the higher inocme tax but the tax levvied on all purchase 8%GST + 7%PST = 15% . Also, there is no housing mortgage deduction (unless you are self-employed and operate a business from home).
This is just a guesstimate. If you are making $50,000 in Chicago (living in suburbs, not downtown), you'd need about $70,000 in Toronto for same lifestyle; of course it also matters whether or not you have family/kids/their age etc.
