The article you forwarded is from a non profit group and makes the following claim:
"Most of sponsored people as spouses cheat their wives/husbands as soon as they become Canadian residents because their sole purpose for marrying is to obtain Canadian immigration"
Unfortunately, unless a group can back up blanket statements like the one above with facts and data, It can be hard to sway public opinion.

The above claim is not generally true of indians. However some Indians intentionally pay money and perform marriage to get sponsered. They willingly get annuled after reaching Canada.In 2002 , a sri lankan told me that Immigration of Canada, allows 3 marriages (at the max. and which should include 2 divorces) to be performed in the home country of the immigrants. I canot confirm this but only what a sri lankan told me. He also told me that the current rate of sponsership of a spouse for commercial reasons (in 2002) was $10K.
But the opposite, is true of some Indians. There is a specific indian group in Canada who marry spouses from India but never sponser them. As far as i know, there was even an article in an Indian newspaper which called for laws in India to curb this.

You are correct it is not generally true about Indian’s, but you know lots of family feel ashamed to discuss this publicly because they feel there reputation will hurt once people find out there husband/wife left them for someone else. There are also lots of Canadian/American going back home, getting married and not sponsoring their spouse which is also wrong and we all as Canadian should speak against these kind of practice. So that one day Canadian press do not generalise us and say look what NRI’s are doing to make money. I agree most people do understand what marriage is but there is also other side of the coin where people have made this a tool to get immigration. Why would you pay an agent $10K if you can convince someone to take you as spouse and migrate here?
I think if the law was little stricter like in UK, Australia, etc. to protect the Canadians from this fraud then people will think twice ...
