First this poster was asking for Calgary. He has now modified his post to Ottawa now. So any response should be for the nearest US airport to Ottawa from where this individual wants to drive to Ottawa.

MR, I was almost going nuts when I re-read the original post. I thought it asked for Calgary and that's what I replied to, and then Calgary becomes Ottawa .....

Can you fly into Toronto? Most airports will have flights to Toronto that will be very economical (its a hub). I would advise against flying to Ottawa directly because its much more expensive...but the airport is very cute/small.

It's very common. We do that too. When my wife visits her brother in Phoenix, I drive her to Buffalo and from there she flies out to Phoenix. Even with the driving (x2) once for drop-off and again for pick-up, it's still cheaper. Buffalo to Phoenix return costs me around CND 250-275, where as the same thing from Toronto would cost around CND 500. Multiply that by 3 tickets.
