Hi there CD's
First of all, want to inform everyone that my participation here will decrease. I will, however respond to queries abt studying in Canada as well as ppl who want to come to Canada on student visa's.

Last week, I moved to Missouri. Applying for a TN visa @ Ottawa airport was painless. I passed through customs and baggage checking. At immigration, I was taken to a separate room. The officer was more confused than suscpicious. Again the refrain was "Oh! you have also done your studies from India" Which goes to show...

The fee was 50$. If you are crossing the border by car / bus then the fess will be 56$ (all in US currency). he asked a few questions (more for the sake of asking rather than trying to know anything.. But he was friendly and not rude).
It would be preferable to take the amount in Cash. They do have credit card facilities.

I came here on a Post-doc. So if you, prospective graduate students are planning to come to the USA on post-doctoral visit's then it would be better if you asked your supervisor in the USA to issue you a letter with the following information :-

Position :- Post Doctoral researched (NAFTA classification - Research Assistant).

The officer had a hard time finding out the correct classification of a post-doc. Anyways, the weather in Missouri is milder when compared with Ottawa. However, very few desi's here. Only 2 desi stores . They do screen desi movies here ...

Any further information, please feel free to add your queries here. I won't respond to pvt messages. I would advise anyone, having any further queries to post their queries here. Additionally, if you have had your education from any other country other than India, I am sorry but I cannot comment on them. I also do not know what questions, if any, can be asked at the border.

Congrats ,what is the validity of Tn is it for one year initially and then u can extend it every year witin usa or do they give it for more years in one go.If i am not wrong u can have ssn # and can work like H1 with no green card options.

I have one more question if i come to usa on Tn and keep it reniewing every year till my wife who is on H1 gets her application for Green card ,will she be able to include me on her green card application though i will be on TN.

HI Ottawa nerd

How do you get TN at air port. This sound trivial but where do you go to in airport. Is there any separate place for that or you go at custom clearance as usual. If yes how do you go to custom clearance without ticket?

I am also a post-doc and I got my Ph.D degree in Canada. Would it be any advantage??

You go to US Immigration counter in the airport. All flights to USA pass through US immigration checks from within CANADA !!! So if you pass through that counter, you are actually in a US domestic flight from there on.
I think there may be such a facility at Edmonton airport. I am sure there is a facility at Calgary International airport.
