Right now the exchange is pretty poor and has become a good tax advantage since your Cdn $ converted income is not 50% more than US wages, but only 9 to 11%. That itself is a huge savings since it may be protecting you from jumping into a higher tax bracket (in Canada).

Maximize the RRSP contribution. Reduce or eliminate 401k contribution.

I do not know what that means. Tax gurus on CD can enlighten you on that.

How much can you contribute to RRSP ?
The allowed RSP contribution is a max of certain percentage of your previous year's eligible income or a certain amount of $ (I forget what the % or $ are), whichever is lower (I think). When you file your taxes for, say, yr 2006, your notice of assessment will tell you how much you can contribute for the year 2007.

Current I-94 is mandatory along with the approval (I-797). It is good to have a current valid visa stamp but you can travel with a expired H1 stamp on the passport.

Dimple/Pwin,
Some more questions. Thanks for the help.

1) This question may not be as stupid as it sounds :) - I have a Nissan Maxima car, can I drive it without any issues in Detroit/Windsor ? I have heard there is some animosity against people driving Japanese cars in Detroit/Windsor since it is the capital of N American auto industry. Will I stick out like a sore thumb or would it be ok.

2) I have heard downtown detroit is very dangerous. I believe tunnel is close to downtown. Is it wise safe to drive if you are working late etc.

3) Does Windsor have desi infastructure like grocery stores, temple, movie cinema etc ?

4) How do you all make sure you never forget or loose your passport and documents ? This must probably be only place where you would keep passpot with you every day. Any tips ?

5) Do you recomend any place in Windsor to Canadianise my car so it meets Ontario reqts ?

Thanks

1. These are stories from the 80s and early 90s. Not anymore. There are tons of non Big 3 cars in town. You will be perfectly ok.

2. You are safe. Jefferson Street and couple of blocks from there are perfectly safe. You will also have the privelage of almost running over homeless guys blocking a lane or two begging.

3. There is a good desi store right near the tunnel called Bhuller Plaza. Then, there are 2 or 3 scattered elsewhere. Most are decent. Yes, there are 3 or 4 movie complexes. There is something calling themselves a temple. I am not a temple goer, so I'll pass on the comment.

BTW, Windsor and suburbs is almost 300,000 people. So, yes, there is everything including Hooters ;)

4. You forget them couple of days, you'll learn to remember after that in some way or form....;) :D No tips, I just keep them in my pocket, that's it.

5. Visit http://www.riv.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK It has all the details. You will have to use Canadian Tire retail store to Canadianise the car.

One final note on PWin's comment on visa. Although, I cannot say for sure, I don't think you can travel with an expired visa, especially, if you are a Cdn resident and commuting across everyday. Please be cautious.

Hi Dimple,

Thank you for answering my questions. You have been of great help.

Have you found any issues getting an H1B Visa stamped at the US Consulate in Toronto if you told them you live in Windsor and work in Detroit ? I mean would it be more difficult than if you told them you live and work in Detroit ?

Also what have you found the best way of transfering funds to meet your commitments in Canadian $ . Do you deposit your pay in a US bank and then transfer funds as needed ?

How bad was the traffic this week once the news of the London bombing plot came out ? were there any heavy delays/closure of the tunnel ?

Also what about cell phones. Do US cell phones work in Windsor, if you live close to the tunnel on Wyndotte street etc ? are they considered local calls ? Is it better to have a US cell phone or Cnadian cell phone if you want to use one on both sides of the border.

Finally, do you need to have an address in MI for MI tax purposes ? DO you give your work address as permanant address of do you provide your ON address ?

Thanks

Dear Dimple,

Great Information !.

My Accountant friend who does Tax Consultancy in Mississauga was cribbing after reading your post that the posts of you were worth atleast CDN $250.

Whenever you respond please consider the point that others are making a living through this !.

Good Luck !
