You are very welcome. Glad to be of productive assistance. Of course, I am also equally talented at bashing other countries when we have the silliest India/Canada good/bad fights ;) .

Have you found any issues getting an H1B Visa stamped at the US Consulate in Toronto if you told them you live in Windsor and work in Detroit ? I mean would it be more difficult than if you told them you live and work in Detroit ?

No issues. In fact when filling out the visa application, the payment of fee method is different for Cdn residents than for US residents. So, the consulate would know where you live and they don't have any issues.

Also what have you found the best way of transfering funds to meet your commitments in Canadian $ . Do you deposit your pay in a US bank and then transfer funds as needed ?

I have direct dep into a US bank. I have an account in a Cdn bank. I write myself a US bank cheque and deposit the cheque into my Cdn bank. Initially, they may not clear the cheque immediately since they do not "know you". So, at that time, you could use the option of wiring the funds from US bank to Cdn bank. Once they get to know you. They have no issues accepting a US bank cheque and depositing in the Cdn bank and clear the funds for immediate use.
Be nice to the tellers...it works charms:)

How bad was the traffic this week once the news of the London bombing plot came out ? were there any heavy delays/closure of the tunnel ?

So far, nothing different. No closures of any kind anywhere.

Also what about cell phones. Do US cell phones work in Windsor, if you live close to the tunnel on Wyndotte street etc ? are they considered local calls ? Is it better to have a US cell phone or Cnadian cell phone if you want to use one on both sides of the border.

Us phones work good anywhere. However, depending on how close you are to the Detroit river and border, the phone might pick up either Cdn service provider's signal or US's. In that way, you may get hit with roaming charges and international charges.
I have North american plan through Verizon Wireless through my employer and it works from and to US, Canada and Mexico.

Finally, do you need to have an address in MI for MI tax purposes ? DO you give your work address as permanant address of do you provide your ON address ?

No you do not. You can have Cdn home address and things work out just fine. MI and US IRS both have the ability to mail out the refund cheques and anything else to your Cdn address without any issues.

Canadian PRs can commute to US everyday for work with a expired visa stamp but a valid I-94 card. Some conditions apply like one did not apply for a visa while outside US & got rejected & there is no change in status. More details are on US Dept of State website.

This is the info I found. http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/req_canada_mexico.xml

and http://www.amcits.com/british_commonwealth_citizen.asp

IT says, "Entry of Non-Citizen Residents in Canada or Bermuda
Effective March 17, 2003, citizens of Ireland and nationals of British Commonwealth countries resident in Canada or Bermuda are required to present a valid non-immigrant visa for entry to the United States, unless they are a national of a country designated eligible to enter under the Visa Waiver Program. Information in obtaining a visa while in Canada is available on the Website of the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa, Canada."

Can you provide the link or info that says that PRs can commute to work without a valid visa? Thanks.

Dimple,
Sorry a few more in a seemingless unending list of questions.

1) Do you fill out the NR forms for US & Michigan taxes ?

2) Do you have to pay Detroit city income tax. Would Detroit city income tax apply to me if I work in Troy, MI. Can we get Canadian tax credit for Detroit City income tax ?

3) If I am commuting during work hous Monday -Thursday what is ideal time to leae and return. On avg how much would you say it takes while crossing the portion from Windor side to Detroit on daily basis (one end of tunnel to other completing all procedures).

4) If one has US medical insurance can you get prescription medicine in US for personal use and take them to Canada (since OHIP doesnt cover drugs, but US employer health insurance does).

5) What is the deadline for filing Canadian taxes. Am well aware that US deadline is April 15th.

Yes.

No DTW tax if you work outside of city limits. Troy is not DTW. So, you are ok. If you work in DTW, yes, you can get the refund/tax credit.

Morning - between 6 and 7.30; Evening - anytime is fine.

Crossing crowd is not an exact science. It usually takes anywhere between 2 min to 15 minutes at the immigration booth.

Yes.

April 30th.
