Hi guys ,
I am planning to move to Canada In April 07 . I have to make a list of amount of money i am bringing . Now what is confusing to me is whether i need to show my full assets in india (which one day i may sell and get the money to canada)or just the amount i am carrying with me .
Also i will be carrying all my jewelery . how do i list that , each item or just the entire value . do i have to carry any recipts .
In my cargo i have a lot of electronics which have dual system so do have to value each item .
Am i allowed to carry spices in my cargo . what kind of spices i should carry . Can i have a whole box of spices only .
And is there anything else i should bring with me? i live in Muscat , Oman . But i am going to India next month , will back to Oman then leave to canada .
Any advise , pls feel free , how small u may think it is . need it all in this trying time .
regards
jenny

Hi,
You may prepare and submit 02 lists - 1 of goods accomapnying you and 2 goods to follow. When u land u may need to show both the lists .Each list should be printed , items valued serially and totalled .
Regarding money , you need only the details of money that is accompanying you.Other relevant details can be mentioned in your tax return.
As for jewelry , get your jewelry valued by an authorised jeweller in India .They charge 1% or something and will give you a list of items and the values against them. You can use this list during landing.
Cargo may take 2 months .Check whether spices would last that long.
I am sure if you would use 'search in charcha' feature of this site you will find answers to similar queries. For a start key in 'goods to follow ' and check results.

I would suggest don't get too much spices and all.....u get almost everything here in Toronto now. If you are used to home made spices then only its a problem. just carry spices n all just for initial days...once you get used to area you can always look for desi store n get whatever u want........believe me you get absoulately everythg which we get in India....and not that expensive.
Jewellary - If you relatives in smaller cities in India you can always visit small Jewellar and ask them to write it for you..i think paying 1% of your Jewellary amt would be too high...just give them something like 100-200Rs.
A correction - thats .1% or .2% .On a value of INR 2 lacs they will charge approx Rs 400/- .Only Govt approved valuers can do this . Dont know what will be the charges in Mid East but they would be certainly more than India.

HI fido .
i did speak to a jewellry shop here in Oman . they said they have an offical license to value jewellry here . But they are charge 2% of the value . so if i have jewellry worth Ro 1000 , 2% is Ro 20 ie is around Rs 2220. that is expensive.
now do i need to do it with these guys or can i do it with my own jewellry shop on their letter head with their offical seal . According to the shop Oman does not have a gold council . It is in Dubai only .
so what should i do , use my jeweller????
And thanks for the suggestion on spices .

What is the total value of your jewellery in Canadian dollars?
As a new immigrant keep in mind that many people import cars (sometimes as costly as 20K - 25K ) duty free.
