China A-shares close broadly higher; key index at fresh high - UPDATE
04.12.07, 4:58 AM ET
SHANGHAI (XFN-ASIA) - A-shares in Shanghai and Shenzhen closed broadly higher on strong follow-through buying with machinery and power companies in demand, dealers said.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A- and B-shares listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, closed up 35.81 points, or 1.02 pct, at a record 3,531.03, after moving between 3,488.08 and 3,532.86.
The key index ended up for 19 of the past 20 trading days. Turnover fell to 148.37 bln yuan from 156.21 bln in the previous session.
'The Shanghai Composite index passed 3,500-point resistance easily on the back of strong follow-through interest, with gainers significantly outnumbering decliners,' said Jiang Fan, an analyst at Soochow Securities.
Analysts said the market will likely see some corrections in the short term after recent rises.
'I believe there will be some corrections around current index levels because the market has risen a little too quickly and sharply over past weeks and a consolidation is definitely necessary,' said Zhang Yi, an analyst at Yibang Investment

China Shares Rise to Record
© 2007 The Associated Press
SHANGHAI, China — China shares rose to record high on Monday on strong demand for financial stocks.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which tracks both A and B shares, rose 2.2 percent to 3596.44, the tenth time it has hit a record this month alone. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index rose 2.7 percent to 973.88.
Fund managers sought out financial stocks, pushing the sector sharply higher, analysts said.
China's gains were also helped by a rise in financial stocks in Hong Kong, where an H-share financial index futures was launched on Monday.

Yesterday China went down 5% and pretty much took the world down with it except for the mighty Dow which stood its ground and actually closed flat in the green.
Looks like the world felt a bit short between the legs (excuse the macho metaphor) and today decided to show up the US and spring back up.

Shanghai (dpa) - Chinese stocks on Friday recovered most of their losses from a day earlier, when they saw their biggest slide in seven weeks.
Corporate earnings reports, including those from GD Power Development Co and Tsingtao Brewery Co, helped shares gain as did many investors' belief that Thursday's correction was excessive.
The indices that track the two mainland exchanges fell nearly 5 per cent Thursday after the government reported that China's economy expanded 11.1 per cent in the first quarter, feeding speculation that the world's fastest-growing major economy is overheating and might raise interest rates.
On Friday, however, the Shanghai Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's larger mainland bourse, gained 135.19 points, or 3.92 per cent, to close at 3,584.20.
The Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on the smaller exchange, rose above 1,000 - up 43.84 points, or 4.57 per cent, at 1,003.84.
The benchmark CSI 300 Index, which tracks yuan-denominated A shares on both exchanges, finished 138.98 points, or 4.41 per cent, higher at 3,289.28.
BSE followed suit opening with a gap and up 277 points at 13897.
