I am moving from South Korea on Work Permit and landing in Canada in mid September. We will be staying in Bedford (Nova Scotia) some where on Royal Masts Way Street.

We would be grateful if we can get some advice on following.

Atta: Where can we get Atta. I understand that there is a Sobeys store nearby. Do they sell Atta and any other kind of basic food stuff like rice and daals etc..

Indian Grocery Shop: From this site I know there is a Indian grocery store on Robie Street in Halifax. Are there buses going to this shop area.

Weather: How cold it is going to be in mid September.

School Admissions.; My daughter (9 years old) would be attending Bedford South School. Any advice on admission procedure would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rajesh

You'll meet a lot of Haligonians there after landing.

Bedford South School and Royal Masts Way are five minutes walk away from each other dependong on where you are located on the street.

Admission into the schools are free. Be there on the Fourth of September on the opening day and also drop them a note by Air Mail and also call them if you can. Get a brand new pair of running shoes for the start of the school and a Note book and a pencil. They supply the rest. Bring all the vaccination certificates, birth certificate, School transfer certificate, Language proficiency papers and any other accomplishments that she has from the previous country and schools and the level that she has attained in that location. { Here she might get into Grade 4/5 depending on the standing obtained}

You are in Luck: http://www.pataks.ca/events/indian101.html look for Bedford location of SOBeys. That is what I used to call them and they are the only ones who claim that in BOLD LETTERS. See the store front.

Mid September: The weather is normally warm and rainy, foggy patches in the morning. Sept/Oct are very pleasant months. Light jacket or sweaters and Cardigans are in order. In late November you will see a few flurries.

Don't forget to bring a box of 'yujacha' the citroen tea and 'gochujang'* the chilly paste from your end. Also a bamboo parasol. Hope they let you take it through the scanning machine, because it is an incendairy substance*!

Wecome to the whole family to Canada.

Freddie.

Thanks Freddie for this informative reply

Our landing date and house address in now confirmed. We will land in Vancouver on 19th September. Take rest in Vancouver one night and will reach Bedford on 20th September late night. House is 91 Royal Masts way. I checked on Google earth and it is very close to Bedford South school.

Vaccination record and all other certificates are with me. I tried to call the school but it seems they are closed due to holidays. Are they very particular about date of admissions.

Atta: I checked Sobey online store and they have Robin Hood Whole Wheat Floor. Is this ATTA or Maida.

Thanks

Rajesh

Hi Rajesh,
Fifty years ago, I wore an apron, but it was for tools and nails, but I slowly graduated to the otherside. That was a shop Apron. Now I am the chief cook cum bottle washer, with a chef's apron, gardner on the days I have to Mow the lawn, shoveller on the days that I have to clear the snow from the side walk and the garbage man on the day of the week that I have to dispose of the waste and the recyclable materials. I am afraid to tell you but humble to admit that I have no helpers. What ever that I can be, just like what the US army slogan says, "Be all that you can be". I have stood up to the times of need. I am still the boss and I have my wife's permission to say so.
Sorry to say that the Robin Hood Whole wheat Flour* is bleached all purpose flour. For our Chapaties and Parathas we use the stone ground ATTA there are many brands but the Main ingredients are the same.
BUNGE and Archer Daniel and Midland {ADM}are the biggest graneries in the whole world. We use their products. The main ingredient is Canadian wheat, DURUM, if we can get it or the Canadian RED most of the time. There are others in the Market such as Heera, Parle, Golden temple, Sher and I can go on naming them. All of them are good. Only a few provide the "Stone Ground' variety. It has a taste of its own. You go by the price and choose ADM if the quantity and the price are to your liking.
You surely must like your Pachaties. Bon apetit. Do you make Phulkas or the Piranhas.? Do you flip them or roll them? Mine is still stuck to the ceiling. (Ha Ha)
You want to know? Some of the grocers even deliver the groceries to your home there(Door). Please call and find out, if you need such a service.
As regards the schooling, please send 'photocopies' of all of the documents to the 'Principal' of that particular school by the snail mail and ask him to provide some services for you with a reservation in grade 4/5 for your daughter, where ever you think she will fit in an ENGLISH and Math based curriculum. The rest will follow. The schools generally re-open on the first tuesday after the 'Labour day'{( And in Canada the labour day is the first Monday in September, and it is a LONG week end}}
Hey you are learning fast. Now go look for the Apron.

Have a great trip and do spend a few extra days there in Vancouver and get to see the place better. It is a beautiful place. No one will give you any flack. But make sure you report on the day that you are supposed to join the work in HFX

Freddie.

Hi Rajesh ,

You have the best option and selection of food products at Pete's frootique (check website - they have a store @ Bedford Mall & Spring Garden Road)

Then you have Atlantic Superstore and Sobey's .

Bulk Barn is a good place for grocery especially hard whole wheat , pulses and all.

Last but not the least you have Indian stores @ Robie / North & Oxford / Cork where there s the Hindu temple also . Dont forget buying the grill for rotis at the Indian store , Robie .

All above are worth visting so that you can make your choice of purchases.

Sept should be good for a shirts and light sweaters / jackets occassionally .
