Hi all,
First of all I really appreciate about all the people here who are sharing the information. It was really helpful to get information from this site.
We are moving to halifax from USA and we are not able to find some information about few things when we move there. If anyone have information can you please share with us
1. Hows is the public transport for commuting in halifax on the whole. Is it like in US or better? we currently own a car in US but when we check the car isurance it seems pretty expensive so were not able to decide if we want a car or not while we are in Halifax.
2. How is the place and people. Are they friendly?
3. Will 65K CAD be good enough for a family of 3 ( 2 Adults and a 2 1/2 year old kid)
Any information will be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Ramesh.
If you are living in downtown halifax and also living in down town then you can survive without car in summer. Use summer time to get the driving license and then buy car.
Yes insurance cost is pretty high in Canada but don't go by the quotes that you ge on internet. I was getting internet quotes in the range of $4000~$5000 but actual insurance was done at $1800/annum for the first year for new immigrant with no prior driving experience in North America. In my fourth year now I am paying $1200/annum
For salary. check any online calculator to get an idea (idea only) of take home.
You should search Charcha for "Halifax" and you will get lots of post on the living cost..
people are friendly if you friendly with them
Thank you very much for your information.
If you can, please provide any known reasonably cheaper and decent communities or apartments to rent in downtown Halifax .
any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Try Killam Properties : http://www.killamproperties.com/ : decent professional landlords .
To keep costs down , stay @ Dartmouth and bus / ferry to Down Town is just 15 - 20 mins away ..... But if you are in Bayers Rd , Jo Ho dr. area then ...... staying beyond Mumford Terminal / Bayers Road can be a better idea ....
Halifax is a nice n very beautiful place with cheap property prices and rentals .... but lack of opportunity and growth and immigrants / multiculturalism ( vis a vis GTA ) ... might not be an ideal settling down city .

Fido.
People are very friendly and nice .. Genuine regards for them ... If both spouses are working @ 65K ... this is equivalent to $150K in Toronto easily with less living costs.
