House are cheap and rents are low but in few years the shipbuilding contract will kick in and prices will start increasing. I am into oil and gas and their is nothing much here in this field also. Most of the oil and gas jobs are in NFLD. gas prices are regulated by the province and are always higher compared to other province. Most of the jobs are seasonal and people enjoy living on EI. Shell might by coming to novascotia but actual job creation will take atleast 5 years. Even though I am earning more than 100k but I don't see any avenues of growth in career. Finally decided to move to west. Kids are not happy but daddy has to pay the bills.
Taxes may be higher but cost of living is lower due to cheap real estate .. The same house you d buy here in 300K can be available there in 180K...
Rent wise as well .... 2 br apartments can cost 700-750 which would cost 1200 here ...
Housing is always a major factor in cost of living .

True but if it is difficult to save as mentioned above with the 80K or more salary its tough.
Recently, I had a chat with acquaintance living in Halifax. He forwarded me a link:

As per him there are few Indian families living here and transit / shopping all are within walking distance. Downtown takes around 30 mins by transit, the other area were Indian community live is Clayton. The houses there are newer and rent might be $100 less.
Saving, I think is a relative term. If you are stay at home with family kind of person then even $80K is good in NS.
My 2 cents .
Cost of living is cheaper in Halifax taking into consideration cheaper real estate and so is auto insurance ..... 70K in Halifax should equal 85K in Toronto ....
Small friendly place but with lot less multiculturalism and Indian community as compared to the GTA ..... Worse roads as well as weather ... In Ontario you have more conistent weather unlike NS where even in summers you need to carry a light jacket - now and then and defintely very windy ...
Less opportunity for growth which is why people move westwards which in turn puts the real estate low ....... Less Indian restaurants , temples and on a whole a lot less proportion of immigrants .
But beautiful place ... very beautiful and scenic ..... lots of waterviews & lakes with in the region .

Fido, I don't agree with you at all. While yes rents may be nominally lesser in Halifax (compared to Toronto), other costs and taxes more than make up for it. Even home prices have risen immensely. Gas prices much higher, dairy products, generic groceries, meat, clothes etc. everything way more expensive in Halifax. And I think the person above said he was making 80-85K US$ now. I would like to think it is pretty difficult to get that salary in Halifax where the salaries are more in the 60K-70K range.
Yellowknife ... If you look at cost of living anywhere , you will find that accomodation is the most major expense ..... and thats a common factor with most major cities why the cost of living goes up .
Rent , auto insurance were cheaper .... as compared to groceries and gas they comprise twice or thrice the value .
I may not have read the original post carefully - mine were general observations ....
