Greetings All,

It has almost become a routine going into charcha and reading the posts..it is a storehouse of info for sure..during one such visit I decided to read about OCI / PIO and voila came up with some silly questions (which is very usual of me) if you may

There was this comment:
"It (OCI) costs $421, but is a life long free entry to India with no restrictions on length of stay. For kids, apply for a PIO card ($240) which is valid for 15 years and get it upgraded to the OCI by paying another $40. You will save approximately $140/kid by adopting this route compared to applying for OCI directly."

Questions:
1) Does this mean that only the ones born here can go the PIO then OCI way?
2) Can one apply for OCI when in desh (India)?

Thanks for your responses in advance
b

1. No.

2. Yes you can apply in India. Fee in India is cheaper.

Well that PIO and OCI rule is same for kids and adults. The only problem kids will face in future is their photo on the OCI card. OCI is a lifelong document without any expiry date. Photo on this document can not be changed or added.

So today if your kid is 6 month old.. even if she/he becomes 60 years old she/he will be carrying same document with 60 yo photo and will have hard time to prove that it is her/his photo.

So it is always better to get PIO for kids first and after 15 years when they become lil mature go for OCI.

How do you know the fee structure will remain the same after 15 years, that it will still be $40 for PIO card holders?

Photo is their problem not card holder's (even adults are not going to look the same their entire life).

Well I did not say any thing about fees... I agree it may go up ( does $$ 100 or 200 really matter for a life long fees).. but being an International traveler for almost 25 years I know photo can become a big problem ( only in India not in other countries).

Once you are 15-20 years old your face still change towards adult hood but still one can match with photo.

While your understanding might be right, what do you think would immigration department treat it is as if a child never went through the PIO card procedure and took OCI directly? That would be the only document he would have for the rest of his life.

If that be the case, I am sure, the govt of India would have thought of some way that either the photo or the card itself can be changed.

Well we know how Government India does work… I have checked with the embassy.. and there is no such provision to modify the OCI, the only thing you can do is get another OCI if you need a new photo and pay full fees again.
