Hi Balaji,

Thanx for your reply. But i heard that if we take new furniture from here we have to pay duty there ? Is this right????

Anybody know abt this???

Thanx

No Jyoti , if you are landing here first time you won't have to pay duty on any personal item. When you land just let Customs Officer know what you are intended to bring within 2 years of landing. You will have tp prepare list of those items though !

Thanks and regards.

Hi Biomed,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. So we don't have to pay duty on new items also??? I thought we can only bring the used item without paying CD(custom duty) as mentioned in the booklet we got alongwith our landing papers.

Another Question i have is about the software Cds.. Do they check the CDs. I have lot of softwares for which i dont have licences. I would like to mention that this software is bread and butter for me to do R & D to update my skills.. I dont intend to sell these software.

I cannot say about present rules since I have not checked them, but theoratically, you can bring in ONLY those items which you have owned and used for a minimum of 6 months. Practically, they do not check what you have brought if the items list presented to them is good. For me it took me about 7 minutes to wait for the officer to call me to his desk, and less than 5 minutes to approve import (release of container) and let me go off (half my container was of new things!)

You can look up the rules in the booklet you must have received with your visa approval and the manner in which list has to be presented.

Well tey may or may not. If they check and you have copies of SW, you may be in trouble.

Thanks and regards.

Well as long as your stuff is not in the original packing, you should be OK... no gaurantee though. It all depends on you how you are gonna explain them :D

Thanks nd regards.
