Ask your neighbour for a picture from the catalogue or from the newspaper flier where he saw the item. Get the bill and the dollar amount he paid for it. You tell the Indian Customs it is a gift from your neighbour to you. Get a letter from him stating the same. Carry it into India. Q.E.D.
There is a free amount, which I think is Re.20,000/- or Re.75,000/- per person in a year. Use it. But you can see the Indian Custom rules in here and see in which catagory you fall into.

Hope this helps.

Indian customs, like most countries, would go by the international prices when levying duty - even if the price that you paid is higher than what you (your friend) paid for it.

Hi !
Any item that fits in your pocket should not be a matter of concern .. Nowadays custom is very relaxed especially for flights from North America ( since not too much of gold and electronics can be carried from this part of the world ) ..
Now they even allow you to carry your personal notebook ( signboard on custom ) .. If I was you I would not be at all worried .....

Q.E.D. is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase "quod erat demonstrandum"
There are a lot of 'postulations' that float around and it takes time and work to come to that conclusion one expects to prove. The method and the explanations with all of the fundamentals such as rules and regulations and the manner and the route by which it arrives at that conclusion is called "quod erat demonstrandum".
In short I demonstrated ONE such route for you to follow. There may be many more ways and means to arrive at the same solution. At the end of the last paragraph, you write Q.E.D.
In plain English, I just say, Quite Easily Done. (No sweat).
{In short do all of the paper work and carry the same with you. If the Customs people at the Indian end don't question you, then, you have a smooth sailing. If not you are 'well prepared' for their onslaught. You come up winning does not matter which route they take you through}
It is nice to know the rhymes and the reasons behind every action.
Safe trip and bon voyage.
Freddie.
