I felt the same when I was literally conned by these guys. Its sort of catch 22 situation.

I have seen more than several instances when desi furniture stores fleece their customers.

Also any particular stores selling pine / oak beds , similar to pine futon material - simple wood boards ?
Thanks Viggy , I will check these , this wweekend . Yesterday I also learnt that almost all desi stores have free copies of some East Indian services directory where you can find desi furniture stores who are ready to build furniture to order . Let me check that as well and I shall update this thread .

Hi ,
I checked out the following places
Orenda & Kennedy (50 Kennedy Square ) 3 stores in the area - one inside the mall ? and 2 besides Brick .
Khalsa Drive on Derry Road East (behind the Sikh Gurudwara)
Rexdale Mall
Ikea on Queensway
Dundas Road E b/w Dixie and Crawthara , Mississauga .
The above should give anyone a fair idea on furniture availabilty and prices . Ikea definitely has a different product line .... their showroom was awesome ..... one needs to go in the morning and retun in the afteroon .
Of all I found the one at Rexdale mall and 1-2 Chinese stores opp Dairy Queen (Dundas East) to be reasonably priced besides the ones on Khalsa Drive . I could not find any small corner shops though which would have only the catalogues ... all of them had fairly big display areas . Please advise if I missed some important ones .
A solid wood bedroom set costs around $1200/- on average (queen size bed $450 suite built around it for 1000/- to 1200/- total )......I am trying to decide b/w these two beds one of them from Ikea . I agree that most of Ikea's products are pressed wood but there are some good solid wood items as well . Also I am inclined towards the Ikea ' ektorp ' sofa as well .

Please share thoughts if you have had good / bad experiences with any of the above . Thanks .

Fido,
I have had really bad experiences with IKEA products esp. the beds.
From your links, I can see that the IKEA beds donot come with the common hard board bed and then the soft matress on the top. IKEA products are usually wooden rafters + the soft matress on the top. After a few months you would find that the matress sags and that you can feel the rafters at the bottom. Stay away from IKEA's products.
The same case with the sofa's. The looks are contemporart but the sofa itself will start sagging in 2 or 3 months.
IKEA's products are usually cosmetic in nature. They are not long lasting nor are they comfortable or ernometric esp. Bed's, Sofa's etc...
The only good thing about IKEA is the $1 breakfast that they sell in the mornings to lure customers to buy from their store.
If you donot like the furnitures in Desi store's, then you will have to take much more innovative measures :
For Eg. Buy a bed frame for $50 from the Indian stores. They buy Sealy / prestegious matress from Sleep country/ Costco to go over it. Buy some sort of cosmetic headboards from IKEA and try to match it up. Bed covers from IKEA would look good.
For Sofa's, Some other CD would have to advise you on that. Most of the people that I have known have bought it from the Brick where you may get some sort of Clearance (Genuine) now and then. Another place would be sears.
In short, I would say that if you donot like the Desi places, then start looking elsewhere. Stay away from IKEA.
My sincere advise.
Peace

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
I agree with TK..
Ikea's beds are horrible. It was nightmare to disassemble when we moved..
I can not understand why the bed is so complicated apart from being uncomfortable..
I hate Ikea furniture..The chest of drawers we bought can't hold anything..

Bless You !!!
Thanks for your suggestions which are sincerely accepted .
Of all the bed frames Ikea has - only this one (MANDAL) comes in solid pine and looking at it , it appeared to be rock solid pine thick boards all around ........ Rest other frames were weak .
If Ikea quality is such pathetic , I would prefer the other bed rame in the link and an accompanied bed set / suite from any of the desi / Chinese stores then ..... plan to put a good futon mattress on top of the platform bed since now I suspect Ikea's mattress quality as well ...
The sofa s looked so good with the fabric being washable . I guess I will pass that too based on above feedback . Thanks guys .
