Dear CD members,
I am about to move back to Canada and I am mulling over bringing in wooden furniture like a dining table or bedframes - the problem is that , the furniture we bring in from Asia are not 'kiln-dried' like they are in Canada. The result is that such furniture crack and break at the seams after a few months in Canada.
If there are any CD members who know about this and can advise , it would be very useful not just for me but for other prospective immigrants considering the same thing. And we know how expensive furniture is in Canada !!!
Thanks.
Is it advisable 2 get assembled bed / sofa / dining table / ward robe from India alongwith the mattress & cushions considering that furniture in India costs less and is of good quality .

The ply ones not so much

You know you are a desi when ........ You spew forth the virtues of India, but don't want to live there...............You've never had a tanning salon membership
If you are getting solid wood furniture(vs pressed wood) it maybe cheaper in India. Teak and oak are expensive here. Pine and rubberwood is not that expensive(generally...there are variables like brand, design etc that affect price)...though softer than teak/oak.
All this from my personal research in buying furniture and thus limited in accuracy.
However there are various factors like the design, size etc that may not work for you once you have been here for a bit.
Maybe have a look at the different kinds of furniture available on online stores to see the kind of furniture available here. Its a matter of personal taste though and you maybe able to live with what you bring.
otoh...if you are going for an ethnic(desi) look...you'll obviously find more options there. e.g: Chandresh has some fine ethnic looking furniture he got from Asia.
I dont know if the mattresses in India come in standard sizes(king, queen, double, singleetc) like they do here. So if you get a mattress it may not fit the bed frames and vice-versa...unless you get everything.

Q - Heating in Canada requires kiln dried furniture . Can Indian teak furniture (non kiln dried) withstand the heat .
Q - What wud b the price of budget teak furnitures in Toronto viz a double bed / mattress (king size) / 7 seater sofa set / 4 door wardrobe/center table.
Want 2 check on the cost effectiveness aspect. Other informed members may also advise.

If furniture is made of seasoned wood, or if it is old /antique furniture there is no problem with any kind of heat/moisture.
Only when wood is fresh/wet it warps with heat.
(It should be problem only if you buy from roadside/cheap stores)
