I just finished applying for OCI yesterday morning. Just had the satisfaction of watching a perfect Indian Masala Movie !!! Saw all charecters - Villain, comedians , Heroes ( too many of them ) , reformers etc..
I was there at 510 am and was the 26th person to reach there. The first one came there at 2 am !!! Pls read the foll info..
1. They give only 45 tokens a day , so be there as early as possible.. If you are making it to the Consulate only by 730 am you might as well as go some other day.
2. There is an unofficial method to madness there.. Bcos of some crowd confusions cops were called in last week..So the applicants themselves have created this new system.. You have to register your name with a guy ( someone will definitely have this list and everyone will guide you to him ) ..
3. By 730 am an Officer ( who will pretend as if he is representing the most organised Govt dept in the world ) will come and handover the tokens based on this Volunteer's list. You then go upstairs , get ur docs checked and will be called in for Original certs verification and then a rcpt will be issued..
Anxious / Hillarious moments..
1. Anxious - When a lady who came late suddenly wanted to disapprove of this system said that it is based on whoever runs into the consulate first.. She was clearly snubbed when all the people got together and formed a nice queue as per the order in the list.. First time in my life Nice to see my fellow Indians getting disciplined in the face of a threat !! I couldn't see that ldy afterwards..
2. Hillarious - A 75 year old guy making constant comment to the officer " we are behaving very good today , Sir "
3. Everyone congratulation the applicant as he comes out of the Officer's room..
4. Too many mobile suggestion( giving ) boxes ( I meant the people ) ..
5. This guy who came at 10 am ( Don't forget the 26th guy was at 5 am ) and demanding a token !!!!
I enjoyed the entire show , got my application accepted and happily walked out at 1130 am hoping I never have a situation to deal with this office atleast for the next few years !!!!!!!!!
It looks you guys need to talk to Toronto consulate officials to make the process smoother. This process reminds me of US visa procedure in India in 90's.
I have very pleasant experience at Vancouver consulate. Here, you have to take an appointment for OCI and just go on time (with all your documents) and you are out of embassy within 20-30 minutes. Good job Vancouver consulate.

A few months ago, I had sent them an email regarding implementation of appointment system like in Vancouver and Ottawa but I only got a response saying it is being forwarded to OCI department. No response after that.
There is a bit of risk of sending all original documents to Indian consultate by mail but I have taken my OCI that route only. I used Xpress post.
