three more neat ones and among my top picks. All three are academy award winners.
Cider house rules: Great storyline and performance by Michael Caine, Tobey maguire and Charlize Theron. A feel good movie in spite of being unpredictable. Adapted by a novel by John Irving (he also wrote 'son of the circus'...set in India...those who liked 'A fine Balance' by Rohinton Mistry will like the 'son of the circus')
Traffic: Gritty movie about drugs and the battle against them. Michael Douglas is amazing as a powerful govt anti-drug czar brought to his knees by his daughters weaknesses. Benicio Del Toro is good too as a cop caught in the corrupt mexican system. A glimpse into the seemingly futile war on drugs.
Pans Labyrinth: Spanish movie with english subtitles. A Guillermo del Toro movie.
Good story. Contrary to what it may seem..DO NOT watch with kids. Too much direct violence...albeit necessary. A fairytale for adults.

Did anyone see The Kite Runner? I loved the book, but I don't think the movie does justice to a great novel.
Good books are seldom made into good movies though....remember Memoirs of a Geisha?

I beg to differ. To me "The Shining" is the scariest movie of all time. "The Exorcist" uses gruesome images to invoke horror where as "The Shining" creates the same effect by portraying the gradual onset of lunacy on a sane person.
When Jack Nicholson repeatedly types “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” on his typewriter, one could feel strong emotions of fear creeping in.
This movie is a must see for all horror fans.

If you’re interested in alternative movie styles then I would suggest the following movies
Fight Club - An insomniac employee of a car company develops a ruthless alter ego of himself to over come his hate for job/life and forms a Fight club. However he doesn't know about his split personality and continues to picture his alter ego as a separate person thereby turning everything into total chaos. This movie fluctuates between the real world and fantasy world of the same person.
Magnolia – This movie is based on the fact that most people go through similar experiences with their lives. The movie portrays the lives of 10 people on a single day with interlocking events between their lives.
The usual suspects – This movies uses the technique of flashback and narration to depict the events leading to massacre and fire on the deck of a ship. The key person responsible for the attack is camouflaged among 5 usual suspects and the person of interest drifts from one person to another during the course of investigation.
The Usual Suspects is brilliant - love watching it each time.

I think am going to see this one again.
My Favs
"Reservoir Dogs", "Pulp Fiction", "Kill Bill". I didn't enjoy "Jackie Brown" and "Grind House" that much

Action movies
Heat
Inside man
Road to Perdition
Matrix
Speed
Terminator II
Total Recall
Die Another Day

Fargo
Titanic
Ghost
Dirty Dancing
Scarface
Syriana
Babel

Oceans 11
The Score
Little Miss Sunshine - I find it too overrated. I wonder why Alan Arkin won an oscar for that. Just for being obnoxious and swearing on screen.. I presume?
The usual suspects - I saw it on Rogers on Demand without close captions. Somehow could not follow half of the movie. Will have to see it again
Magnolia - Saw it recently. Somehow I did not find it overwhelming
Fight club - Did not "get" the movie
I am not at all into those high rated artsy movies. I would rather prefer to watch Krishi Darshan then watch following movies. I have already burnt my fingers watching the movies based on their ratings on IMDB
Eternal sunshine of spotless mind - I was nauseated by the time I was out of theatre. People were leaving the movie in between
Mulholland Drive
Donnie Darko
Being John Malkovich
