I have a dalmation and a german shephord, both are 1 1/2 yrs of age. named scooby (dalmation) and devil (german shephord). they are good but I don't know y, devil is loosing weight and is living sad these days. got his blood tests, everything is fine except he has some liver infection. so changed his diet from pedigree to dog chow as told by their doct.
but I think as he is still a virgin, it is the major reason that he is not happy from his day to day life.
has someone experienced such a prob?

Has your dog been neutered?

I would recommend top of the line food that has all natural ingredients. They are usually more expensive. Unfortunately I have heard pedigree and Purina etc have a lot of filler, which are not nutritious and are just added to bulk up the food.

Try "science diet" or prescription diet (I think thats the name).
Liver infections dont sound very good :( is he in pain?

Losing weight isnt a good sign is it? what does ur vet think?

Nopes he is not neutered.

it seems that he is in pain, especially when i take him to walk. he walks slowly.... and not that active as earlier.
the vet told that the infection is not that much, so he will be fine. and he gave some syrup for him....
he told me to give dog chow and see the result after 2 months, and discontinue with pedigree....but looking at his weight, i didn;t see any sign of improvement. he is just getting week day by day......

Neutering helps stop a lot of problems in dogs.. (unsolicited advice ) :D

Is dog chow from Purina (thats what google thinks)..?

Also - when we first got our pup he had a bug and he was very very thin. The vet gave him 'prescription diet i/d" (only sold at vet's office). He gained weight and is now normal.

Losing weight and pain? I'd say take him back to the vet..or find another vet.

We gave our pup cottage cheese and yogurt and he seemed to really like it. He also got better.

If you google liver infections in dogs, the information out there seems to indicate give "cottage cheese' and limit meat. Do you feed ur dog raw meat? (some ppl do).

They say also to limit salt to avoid water retention..

Do you go to an Indian vet?

Duncan,
Similar problem was with my German Shepherd in India. We use to feed him curd (home made). Keep watch on his weight, change doc for secon opinion. I feel sorry for the poor guy for he cannot tell us his problem and everything is left on our guess. Try yogurt, plain with him if he enjoys it......best of luck to 4 leg buddy

Thanks everybody for all your inputs. Such a relief to know that pet lovers can think differently.

Half the people here in Delhi think we are crazy because we want to take our pet lab with us! :(

Will be writing more if require further details later on.

Duncan,
Hope your pet is better now. b.t.w. curd and rice seems to be a very good idea for this problem. Do give it a try.

Mel06, it is all normal, afcourse ur pets are part of ur family. this is what I think.
they should not be left alone back in India, if u move to canada. Please bring them with u, or do one thing, first u come with ur family, look for some pet allowed accomodation and then ask someone to send ur dog on any flight which allows them. and I would have prefered air canada, cause atleast they have direct flight from delhi to toronto with just 2hrs halt at zurich. so ur pet will have to live alone for a very short time.......
best of luck. and welcome to canada..........
