Hi ,
We will be travelling to Canada for Landing by the 15th of Next Month.

1)We are planning to come by Rental Car since we have to carry a lot of stuff and the Air lines these days have a lot of restrictions on weight.
Please advise if this a viable option, also it would be great if you can suggest any such car rental services which we can use to travel across border.

2)We have an H1 visa here. We bought a new car here a couple of months back. We cannot import the car to Canada from USA since we cant practically pay off the loan on the car, hence we cannot get the title on the car clear. I would like to know that after landing in Canada, if we can clear of the loan on the car, can we import it later??. The Car will be at our friends care till then. In on of the forums it was told that the car can be added in the "goods to follow list" and later it can be imported into Canada. Can you please throw some light on this issue..

Thanks !

You can use rental companies like U HAUL, Enterprise, Budget etc..they have special Vans just for the purpose of moving. Landing by road is no problem as long as you have all your landing papers in order.

You can always import the car later. Once you land here, maybe you can arrange for a new loan from the bank here and have the loan transferred. There are many credit card companies who offer promotional rates of interest on loan transfers, you can avail of that as well...speak to a financial advisor or your bank here, they might be able to give you more options.

All the best.

Cars are costly in Canada. try to see if you can import the car somehow.

Also once you become a PR of Canada, legally you are not allowed to drive a US plated car into Canada.

Usually as a new immigrant you may not have problem at Canada customs but just so that you know there may be occasional problems depending on Customs officer with an US plated car. I would say Uhaul is a better option

Yes, this is quite common.
Just make sure the rental agency knows that you will be driving the car across the border.
Don't take the car across the border without their approval.
Ideally, you should do a one-way rental i.e. rent in US and return in Canada.
All the major agencies allow this (like Enterprise, National, Avis, etc.)

Either option is possible.
You can keep the car parked in the US and keep making payments on it from Canada until it is paid off.
Make sure the financing company or bank is ok with this.
If you do this, you will need to include the car in your goods to follow list.
You will also have to maintain US insurance on the car during this time.

OTOH, if the bank/finance company is ok with it, the financing can be transfered to Canada (esp. if it's a large financer like GM or Ford Credit).
The credit company can provide you with a copy of the title, which you can send to the US border post where you are crossing.
I don't know the exact process, but I have heard of this a few times.
Call around to the border post and your finance company to determine the exact process.
