Do you mean common man in North India wear Lungi too?

Can you classify Lungi as Tamil dress or Indian Dress?

I disagree...
Going to a citizenship ceremony confers citizenship in what ever attire you go.
OTOH, when you go for a job interview, you need to be dressed smart as getting a job partly depends on it.
Going to a marriage / house warming dressed in formals is subjective. You may be able to network a bit based on dressing.

When u dress up for a job interview, you are dressing up to gain something, which is not yours to take - ie. the job.

When u dress up for a citizenship ceremony or wedding party, housewarming, festivals etc., you are showing respect to the country/occasion/host etc. How will one feel, if guests show up in poor attire for one's function? Citizenship ceremony - that is the function hosted by the country Canada, isn't it?

P.S: On the lighter side, it would have been fun, if you/some one had gone to the citizenship ceremony in bathroom slippers, lungi and a half beard!

TK,

My comments were in response to the above part of Meghal's post - if it something which you consider important, you will dress up your best, suiting the occassion. Like you would dress in lungi an slippers because mixing with the local crowd was important to you which you might not be able to do well (you imply it) if you were dressed formally.
