I have read quite a few experiences of people who have moved to Canada. Some are very good, some not so bad and some are an extremely bad nightmare. I have been here for nearly a year. I was lucky to find a job in my field with in a month. Since then I have settled down very easily. I though I would share a few tips to help everyone

1) Please speak and write good English. This is very very important. Speaking and writing abilities convey a lot about a person. I am not saying start speaking with an American accent. Speak well, slowly and pronounce words clearly. Please stop speaking ‘desi english’. I still come across so many desis whose English is pathetic. Good English is very very important. It is the key to success here. Speak in English as far as possible, even at home.

2) Invest in a proper set of clothes. Dress well and neatly. Shave regularly. I see so many South Asians who are very shabby in their appearance. It is very important to maintain a polished appearance.

3) Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Stop smoking. Most Canadians that I have met hate smokers. Smoking is a very bad habit. Smoking in Asians is common,

4) Learn more about Canada and North America. Read the local newspapers (Post, Globe and Mail). Keep upto date with local happenings. India is not the center of the world.

5) Display proper manners. Learn to say please, stand in a line etc.

Hope these help. If any thing else anybody needs to know - do write

I dont agree...........I wouldnt say most canadians hate smokers.
On the other hand how about most canadians are smokers :D.

Its actually a good way to know and meet people and get into conversations. I am a smoker and I have found it very useful on a lot of occasions, specially when picking up girls. Do you have a light is a good ice breaker ;)

Just see any US or Canadian secondary school esp in the morning . You will see most of the students including many underaged kids puffing away. Smoking is more prevalent in North America and Europe than in Asia ( esp. in kids and youth )

But as you said for a Desi to succeed at work place , smoking is a definite No No..
Also dress well and be clean ( shaving / cologne / ironed clothes / dignified behaviour etc )

Actually more than Asians I have seen many Canadian smokers & smoking is common in Canadians than Asians.

I would also like to add a point in Laloo's message -

We desis pay less attention towards our appearance, body odor & bad breath. U can't smell ur own body odor but others who work with u can & even though you are a nice person & good worker that can push people away. The same with bad breath, coffee breath or tea breath, always keep gum in your pocket or 'clove' or 'sounph' can help.

Laloo I don't know what you thk of all the Chinese and white ppl. who stink the work place with microwaving fish etc at work and then when they speak to you, a person feels like throwing up. It smells more horrible than any dead animal lying on streets of India. Not saying that we should do what they do, but I hate when we desi's just put desi's down and don't look on the other side.
Speaking good english is one thing, but if you talk about writing too then I don't agree. I have met quite a lot of white guys and honestly they can't spell. If they didn't have a spell checker it'll be impossible to comprehend what these ppl. are talking about. In Quebec how many ppl speak English?? How many chinese speak or Philipinoes etc etc etc.
Don't just put Desi's down for that part. Improve yes, but to feel ashamed of what we are is what put's us down. If they can't except our English, pls. change the norms of immigration.

I can't agree more with charles3. Lets not involve in self pity. One shouldn't be judged by the language ability but by the contributions they do to the society. Do you wonder how a Chinese Ph.D. gets through immigration? Even after 10 years in academics they would smell Chinese. End of the day, how one goes about the job counts. If desis come here and get involved in street crimes and drugs, there good English won’t save disgrace to the community in large.
