You will have to learn every thing all over again and in French. You are correct. You please start your lessons in French languages as son as you can. It will come handy. If you ask any Frenchie for directions in English, They will surely shrug their shoulders and ignore you. But they do know the language. In short they want you to sweat it out.
Public school systems are all in French. But when they Enter the Universities, all of them say that they wished that they had learned every thing in English. Then they make a new start in their learning, all over again, in English.
Passed through Montreal, on my way to Quebec City for their 400th year Celebrations. WoW is the word that comes to my mind. It was a grand celebration indeed. SIR Paul was there with his 'geetar' and what a hit he was. (With a few)
Property Values are very comfortable and will suit the pockets, if you decide to buy NOW, and settle down for good. Rents are decent. Not as expensive as T'to or Calgary.
I have been to a few of the restaurants in my travels. One that comes to my mind is Pushap. Vegetarian, and close to what one is used to back in India.
Lots of Indian Groceries scattered in and around and quite decent in prices. Lots of fruits and veggies in the summer at the Super Marche.
The Indian Population is scattered and mixed and concentrated in a few areas. Please see the previous posts.

That should give you a good head start and enough info on all of the basics. You will have to see the other posts on Health, Income Tax, Education etc., from the past links. Don't forget they do change from the posted dates. So, be guided.
Good Luck in your move.

Been here for 11 yrs and never had that experience nor anyone I know. Most Montrealers will oblige by replying in the language you speak to them in. The city is awash with people from down south and toronto etc, during the summer months that most people cannot NOT speak English....especially if they want the tourist $.
The language intolerance is probably a myth that is being reinforced only by every telling of it...even if only in the minds of those who are listening. Albeit, i do not discount the possibility of the odd separatist treating you that way...considering that I have not met one in 11 years you have to be really unlucky to meet someone like that.
To the OP. Yes your kids will have to go to french school unless you choose private school. Just use the search feature...all has been discussed before.
Nice city. Like it better than TO.

Try and help that OP who is trying to get into Montreal. You have to encourage him and provide him with help. See if you can.
And you also know that you can put in as many years as you want to at that location, even a hundred, and still will never make a Frenchie. To be a Frenchie, you have to be born a Frenchie.
See if you can help me with this on the Mapquest.ca It is located in Montreal and the street is St.John West and I will tell you where it is too, close to Victoria Square.
Get back to me when you find it.
Freddie.

Beside French the job market is not strong either.
Which filed are you in ? Do u speak any french at all ?
if you are in labor work then there might be less problem but if you are in high tech job french will be required as initial stage ( at least functional )
beside life is very easy going - most people are happy doing 8 hrs a day job... not rush like other big cities but less money.
ANYWAYS, I AM IN MONTREAL FOR 12 YEARS - LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED SOME HELP

Like I said before a search on this forum will bring enough info. I have spent hours writing them.

If you are saying it will hamper career prospects if you do not speak french. You will be right to an extent. I was brought here from TO due to my fluency in English by a high tech company.
My better half has bilingual canadians(born here) working under her. So do I...I run my own business now.

I just moved my office one block away from square victoria so if you really need to know the street i`ll help.
Did not mean to sound dismissive of your efforts. I used to believe that the french are intolerant too..not too long ago. Maybe true(not to the extent we think imo) in the small towns of Quebec but less so in Montreal(liberals call it 'Fortress Montreal').
