I agree with TK on most of his points.
I used live near the ISRO campus in Bangalore and there were ISRO buses carrying the scientists to work. Guess what! Most of the scientists were sleeping in the bus on their way to work. What kind of productivity can you expect from such so called Scientists? ISRO is just like any other desi babu office with the exception of a few. Arriving late to work, spending time in Canteen, taking a lunch break of 2 hours, making phone calls to family and friends, gossiping about film/politics/cricket and leaving home early.
India was never a leader in emerging technologies and inventions. All we have right now is copy cat or purchased technologies from developed nations and sending a mission to moon is not gonna make any change in our position. The only purpose of this mission is to make a “TOM-TOM” to the world that we’re also capable of sending a mission to moon with foreign technology. That’s it!
Even US is shutting down its space shuttle programs by 2010 due to its increased operating costs.

I’ve been to NASA’s head quarters at Cape Canaveral and the space craft used in the first manned mission to moon (Apollo 11) was lying in a museum there along with specimens from moon for public display. And now, India is trying to replicate something that’s represented in a museum. What a joke?
Though the cost of Chandrayaan probe was at around Rs 400 crore, it’s not gonna stop there. Many other moon missions like Chandrayaan – II, space walk, Manned mission to moon etc.. are getting lined up by these ambitious jokers and it’s only gonna increase the burden on the poor Indian tax payer.
Space race was something that existed during the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and it’s too late for India to join the band wagon now when the race is all over. Hence I would suggest the Indian govt. to get real and focus on the priorities rather than putting an unnecessary extravagant show at the cost of tax payers money.
Technology and social/political programmes don't (and should not) pre-empt each other.
According to NASA, the average cost to launch a Space Shuttle is about $450 million per mission. The USA has its share of woes - not to mention being burdened with the sin of bringing the world down to its knees - but that did not stop them from launching the Endeavour.

Please read the following faq on the isro site. So called "western gurus" should first check the faq or go to ISRO site to get the facts before starting criticizing the venture.
