I buy my fruit and vegetables and other food items at Longos. I am not in habit of driving around looking for a bargain. And the quality of food at Longos is really good.

Recently I have seen that prices of almost all fruits and vegetables have gone up by $1. The cheapest apples - red delicious - are now $1.99 per lb. Grapes are 2.99. Asparagus jumped from 2.99 to 3.99.

I do not care to look at bread's price as in my mind, it is always But yesterday I was shocked to see $.2.99 for dempsters bread, when the cashier scanned the item.

Thanks God, prices of Milk, plain yoghurt and fruit juices haven't gone up, atleast for now.

But real kicker came few days ago, when I had to pay 19 bucks for 10 lb of rice. Normally I always bought rice at 8-9 bucks per pound.

Wonder why prices are so high? Or is it me who has just noticed the change?

It's not just you.
I don't know where you live, but I have noted my grocery bill jump at least 20% in past few months.
And I shop at discount grocery stores like Superstore, Wal*Mart and Food Basics.
Indian rice and aata have shot thru the room many months ago.
We have been paying close to $30 for a 20 lb rice bag for quite a while now.
I could drive into Toronto or Brampton for slightly cheaper rice and aata but with gas prices at over a $1.10 until recently it didn't seem to make sense.

Speaking of which, I suspect a lot of the price increases were due to high gas prices and high energy costs.
It costs more to retailers for transportation and their heating/cooling.

However, a lot of it is also due to profit-taking by the retailers.
Knowing that everything is in turmoil, they have excellent opportunity to mark prices up significantly.

Yes. I agree with Mehgal and Pratick that the prices have gone up but then if you use Longo's , fortino's, Loblaws and Sobey's they mostly will fleece you as they are mostly for multi miilionarioes.
Again, you will get flyers in your house every thursdsay/ friday and look for deals and buy them.
for eg. sobey's sold Apples (any kind) for 47 cents a pound.
Price chopper, FB, No frills are the low cost stores which sell the same stuff as the high end ones.
For cheap prices, visit your local CHINESE grocery store.
I stopped eating Grapes / Bannanas as they are $1.99 / 0.59 a lb at the least.
also try going to the farmer's market at the closing time and you can get stuff atleast 80 % cheaper.
For Indian items, there is really no alternative. I have found that many Indian stores (in Toronto) have run out off idly rice and hence I have to pay primium price to get it from Kitchener.
Homo Milk which is $5.49 per bag is $4.38 in Whole sale Superstore. So a little coomon sense and running around can help save your grocery bill.
Hope this helps

TK. I agree, but runningi around is what I avoid. I am kind of apprehensive muscling around on roads with SUVs and trucks and fighting for parking space.

Also, for me, affordability of basic requirements of life viz food is always a plus point about Canada. Now, with almost 100% increase in price of food, you have to make changes in your budget. Also, the increase in price of oil affects almost price of every other item you buy. And the increments you get, if any, cannot always offset the inflation.

And for people falling into the lower income class, such an increase in price of food can create major issues

Well, the best solution is just ignore it. I mean never look at the price for things, you can't live without. Thats my philosophy. That does not mean, I dont look at my numbers. I do cut, where I feel, I can live without.

Gas, Grocery, personal care etc.. are such heads in the expense sheet, if you start worrying, you feel YOU HAVE BECOME POOR.

Once again, these are purely my thoughts and the way, I take such things, hence ignore me if you dont believe.

Regards,

VJ.

The price of food has increased all over the world.

Having said that, the prices of Indian items at Indian grocery stores defy all logic:D

For instance, try shopping at Patel brothers or India Town located in scarborough. The price of item on the shelf looks cheap as compared to the same item outside. But the moment they punch in the $amount you easily end up with 80$ for items that fit into one small plastic bag.

To make it more confusing, these stores give you a receipt where every item says grocery with no details.

has anyone noticed this? I smell a major scam here.

Seenappa ~Did you try to confirm this by buying a few marked items ?

I do agree with VJ that if we start comparing prices of grocery and start running around we might save few dollars but loose quality time ... unless you are living on a budget ,spend the money on grocery gas as a constant and move on .

Having said that , it does not mean that you should over pay for something .... Do a survey once and then after making choices , stick with them .

I have found No Frills / Price Chopper and Asian Food Center prices to be better than others . But Chinese stores beat these as well . Surprised to find that China Town's vege / fruit prices were lesser than those of farmers' markets. Oceans at Brampton and Chinese center @ Dixie Dundas are quite crowded and offer good prices .

Just to add on , for clothes / linen I look at Sears Outlet as they offer good quality at outlet prices . Electronics - Factorydirect.ca / Tigerdirect.ca / Staples . XS Cargo is another store where I like shopping at if I find a desired item in their flyer . Another flyer I check out is Canadian Tire . For things not found elsewhere , I buy @ Walmart ....
