This past weekend I was at a Chinese grocery store and the prices have definetely increased there as well.
Grocery prices seem to have increased even more since the time this thread was started a few weeks ago.

Does anyone know the logical reasons (other than retailers gouging customers)?

I mean, prices of everything else is down, including electronics, furniture, etc.
Oil is less than one-third of the price it was back in the summer so transportation should be much cheaper.

So what is going on with essential groceries?

Well I don’t think running around for cheaper grocery is necessary. WALMART Supercenter does match the price from other grocery stores. Just take all flyers with you and buy the grocery from Wal-Mart in case of higher price just show them the flyer from other grocery chain and they will match the price.

I always look into grocery store flyers available on two popular sites before going for shopping.

http://www.redflagdeals.com" rel="nofollow">LINK
http://www.pricenetwork.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK

Check for prices and compare them, i hope many will find it useful.

Thanks,

While on the topic, the other thing that's bugging me are the sticky hydro and natural gas prices.
I could understand natural gas prices @ > 30c. when energy prices were in over-drive between 2006 - mid 2007.
But they are still way over 33c.
In fact on my latest bill, it shows as increase to about 34c.

Hydro prices are even more mystery.
The off-peak rate during winter is actually higher than the off-peak rate during summer.
They have reduced the gap between peak and off-peak during winter, thereby screwing over even those people who actually try to consume electricity during non-peak hours.
During summer, peak was 97c KW/hr. and off peak was 27c.
Now it is 47c and 87c.

Anyone has any insight into what's going on with energy prices?
