Fewer than half of the parts on some Big Three vehicles are made in the USA.

Looking at a Ford Fusion? It is assembled in Mexico. The Chrysler 300C is assembled in Canada, but its transmission is from Indiana; the brand's V-8 engine is made in Mexico. Engines in the Chevrolet Equinox sport utility vehicle are from China.
On the other hand, Toyota's Camry is comprised 80 percent of parts made in the United States, and 56 percent of Toyota's vehicles sold in the U.S. also are made here, according to Toyota spokeswoman Sona Iliffe-Moon

It also occurs to me that someone like Warren Buffet was ready to invest such a large amount of money in a company like GE, which is under severe financial strain and at a serious risk of default on its obligations, yet he has shown no interest in the auto companies.
A opportunity like this is normally something Warren relishes and thrives on, yet he isn't touching these with a 10-foot pole now.
This is in spite of the fact that the North American car market is not going to disappear over night - it is still a viable business and a very big market.
GM and Chrysler must be so deep in the s*** hole that no private or institutional investor will lend them any money.
So, let's pillage and plunder the poor tax paying public's money - let's leave the rich investors alone.

The car market is not a dead end market . It is a growing market. Just the type of car bought in the future has changed. No more big cars anymore.
Most urban consumers want to switch to small vehicles. Rural consumers need bigger vehicles as they have to move stuff around.
Soif the Japanese manufacturers get a big share we will have efficient and good quality vehicles.
Hope TATA has money to buy some of these car firms or atleast a part of them .

I am hearing TATA has shown interest in the Jeep brand.

TATA will do a good job. many Indian companies are opening plants in USA. Here in Little Rock ,Arkansas two Indian companies have opened factories to make pipes for oilfield.
The US govt and unions have tried to shield the car industry all these years from outsiders and have thus created this Frankenstien that we see today.

Whats the point of over manufacturing and growing to such a big size that you can't manage yourself ..... these companies are obese and they should shed excess fat .. there s a lot of disguised employment which when cut down , will not only improve their health but the health of the economy also ....
No point in supporting 'white elephants ' ..... environmentally also vehicle over production should be cut down ...
