It's not about the make/model of the car - it's more about the condition of the car.
You will need snow tires for sure.
Also, you will need to carry a car emergency kit with you.
Make sure you have CAA coverage.
Get a GPS if you don't already have one.

Take your car to a trusted dealer and tell them your driving plans and have them check out the car from that perspective.

Also, some part of your driving plan may not materialize so be prepared for alternatives or taking more time than 3 days.
For example, you may not reach Thunder Bay in 1 day.
It's a good 15 - 16 hr. ride under normal conditions.
With darkness falling after 4:00 pm these days and if you meet snow/ice conditions along the way, be prepared to change your plans and stop at the nearest town.

As long as you are prepared (CAA, GPS), carry the necessary provisions (dry non perishable food, flashlight, car maintenance kit) and have your car tuned up, you can do it.

Hi

I realize that your questions were specific to the feasibility of driving your mazda; but I would like to pose some of these questions which you may want to consider;

1) Are you planning to drive alone or you are driving with your family.
2) If you are planning to do it alone, I would not suggest that. You need to consider driving fatigue.
3) If you are going with your family, is there a second driver to help you with driving.
4) Are you permanantly moving to edmonton or are you going for vacation.
5) if you are going for a short vacation then you need to consider the drive back.
6) Usually the onward journey will look easy because you are excited abt your vacation, meeeting friends/family, see new places. but the return journey will feel very different because you will be tired from your vacation activities and the drive will feel like it is much longer. It will be mentally tiring.
7) What is your reason behind choosing to drive as opposed to flying. Does driving come out cheaper enough to warrant 3 days of driving.
8) last question is, have you taken such long road trips before or is this you first very long road trip.

Hope that helps;

Cheers
rsk

On a separate note, if you are moving permanently and any one of you would be joining a new job there (immediately or some time later) you should keep all the records of your expenses whether it is Gas, Food costs, Hotel/Motel receipts etc. and you may be able to claim these expenses as your 'moving expenses' in your tax return next year.

For more information on this topic visit CRA's website and read/learn more about moving expenses.

Good Luck.

If your car has crossed 112K, it about time you get the timing belt and water pump changed. Personally I think you're taking a big risk driving that kind of distance when you say the dealer has advised you to change the belt and pump. Check with some private garages, they'll be cheaper, just ensure they're reliable
