Mahendra Gupta is still in shock about an incident that happened while his family was sleeping.
The Brampton religious leader's home surveillance video caught two hooded men using an accelerant and setting fire to vehicles in his driveway around 2:30am Tuesday. The heat was so intense his car tires and an engine exploded.
Luckily, his 15-year-old son heard the car alarms go off and immediately ran to his parents' room and told them to call 911.
"He is my hero," Gupta stated. "He certainly saved our life. [Teenagers] usually don't wake up. But he did...and he did the right thing."
Gupta is the president of the Brampton Sabha Hindu Temple, less than a block away. He says he has no enemies and believes the crime was motivated by hate.
Back in 2007, when he was first elected president of the Hindu temple, someone threw eggs at his front window.
Peel Police are treating the incident as a hate crime and are searching for two suspects, one of whom may have injured himself while setting the fire.
