I need to take time off in May to attend a family function (3 days). Should i tell my boss that it is a family function or should i tell him 1 day before and say it is a family emergency. All suggestions are welcome...........otherwisen i think i sld tell him now.......

If it's just 3 days, why not tell them in advance and tell them the truth.
Making things up at the last minute is always dangerous.
