Practically, it will depend on which airport you are going to land and time you land and how much $ you are willing to bribe, the way you dress up, your appearance (whether you look like a bakra for them or not)

If you are asking specifically about cash, you can carry any amount of USD, I think. If above some limit, you need to declare. The amount etc. is specified in the customs form you will get to fill in before landing. There is no issue taking USD to India. If huge amounts, they may ask the source - NRI returning with 100K after 25 yrs abroad is okay.. but some one returning after 1 week travel with 100K may get more questions etc.

Personal experience, you may be better off sending it in advance via money2india.com or so.
