External / Portable Hard drive

Hello

I am looking for an external / portable hard drive. Can you suggest a good reliable brand. Heard of stories where the drive has stopped working ina coupe of months.

Or - what is the alternative to back up data - mostly photos and pdf docs.

I have zeroed out on Lacie - but that is quite expensive and I am not sure if I need to spend that kind of money.

Any personal experiences.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions and help.

I bought Western Digital portable palm sized hard drive during past Christmas from Amazon (US site) for $99 USD. It is a 320 gb drive. Recently, I saw the same brand at Costco (Windsor), same capacity for $99 CAD. It runs off USB and powered by the computer, so does not require power by itself.

I very highly recommend these as well. Most convenient and reliable as far as my experience goes...

I store all my pictures online. Picasa Web is a wonderful utility by Google. And you can share it with whoever just by inviting them to view the album, instead of sending all those heavy files across.

Correction on my earlier post...

640 gb = $118 and 1 TB is $179 at Costco. Much cheaper than what I got from Amazon for comparable storage.

I do not want to store my photos online. May be it safe but somehow I feel uncomfortable.

Shall check the WD HD this week.
