I have worked thru co-op program for 3 months as a replacement for the company staff going on a long vacation. They paid me by taking me for 2 lunch in 3 months. To and fro to office costed be more than that for 3 months. Some strategy companies adopt to get free manpower. Some employers are good enough to pay for your transportation. That is the best they can do. Some employers hire you as a big obligation to Dufferin Peel Board.

Co-ops are a 50-50, which is IMO good enough, so give it a try.
Yes some of them seems like a waste (like charlies experience).

I had one friend who did co-op for free (100%) for about 5 months in the Ministry of transportation. Nothing came out of it, he ended up moving to USA when he got an offer for research . But I heard from him that others have been successful in getting at least an entry level permanent jobs in their field based on their co-op work or have been absorbed within.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
