My son will be doing his SSC board exam (Class X) before we make a landing this summer. He will be 16 years old in July. Would be eligible for admission into Grade 11? Would there be an entrance test, and does he need to know French? Are there any courses he could do here or once we arrive that would help?

Hi Margo
There is no entrance test, but they will test him to decide in which grade he should go. As eductaion (schooling) system is not very good in Canada so students from India do not face any problem in writing these tests. French is not a must.
I think, you don't have to prepare him for these tests, these tests are very easy and simple for students from India.
Thanks and regards.

It is advisable to take French as Second Language in yourhigh school program.
Admission is not a problem. Education is must and necessary. Under Canada, every child below 16 has to go to school. Even for kids over 16 who do not want to goto school full time, there are schools to provide diploma and certificate courses for their career building.
There are various programs for High school
such as
Advanced
Regular
International bechaulerate
Generally for IB program they take students with % of 80+
For advanced as well 80% is desired
REgular is for all others.
French is good for children career as French is second language of canada. It will help in marketing of your child career in later part of their life.
Location of your home is critical to have good college. So live close to good school. Otherwise they will not have admission in good school. There are certain rules of admission on the basis of geographical location of your house in terms of proximity to school/college
I wanted to clarify on what a vaccination certificate means ? Is it a certificate from a doc (in india) stating which all vaccinations the kids have got ?
I have 2 kids, and a progress report card on which all vaccines they have recd since birth. Would this work ? It is more of time record indicating dates and names of vaccines given . Pls advise on the same.
Also would a school report card be needed for a 6 year old. My son is in Sr KG and would be 6 in Aug. That i believe is the entry age for schools.
Also where can i get details of schools in London as i intend moving there post landing in Canada.
Thanks
Rajiv
Thanks for the helpful advice . Could someone please advise me which are the good Catholic high schools in Scarborough and in which residential area they are located? Also, is it better to apply for admission before the academic year ends in June or could we wait until school reopens in September? Another thing, since my son will probably get admission to Class XI (date of birth July 1988), would he be given credits for grades obtained in India, since he would have studied for only 2 years in Canada before graduating from high school. He will be 16 in July, would they insist on vaccination records? I hear they generally do not insist after age 16-1/2. Most of his vaccinations were taken when we were in the Middle East and we cannot locate the vaccination card. We have been in India for the past 8 years. Please advise.

Margo, just in case you are unaware:
Dont think any of the public schools give religious instructions specific to one faith.
So catholic schools would be private shools afaik and charge higher fees. You can write to the catholic schol board to find out for sure.

I dont think vaccination records/proof will be an issue at your sons age.

Thanks Biomed and Jake 3D for your replies. Religious instruction is not really an issue. I am told that Catholic schools have better discipline, is that correct? I am also told that of late even Catholic schools are government funded, please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.
