My friend along with his wife and kids will be making their entry in June 2004.
I would like as much advice for different canadian desi members as to how the kids get into school and what grade, test, etc.
One of the kid will be finishing his 7th grade and the other 4th grade in India by April. Will they be able to go to grade 8th and 5th OR will they be in grade 7th and 4th when the school starts in September.
Also can someone

Well in your case there won't be any problem in getting admission for your kids. They will get admission without any test. Grade of admittance would be decided by the date of birth. Further, You won't have option to choose school as your kids will go to the school located in the community you will live.

Don't forget to bring Vaccination certificated and school record of your kids.

Thanks and regards.

Thanks Biomed for the answer.
One more question. What Grade to they start French in elementary school here. I am sure my friend kid if he is going to grade 8 when they come here will have to know basic French to cope up with the rest of the class.
Any more tips that they should know.

One good thing about Ontarian Schools is that they don't expect much from you till Grade 9 as far as french is concern. If student do not know french at all, teacher would work with them by giving some extra home work and basics of the language. During March break students can go for special french classes organized by school boards.

Thanks and regards.

Biomed is right...at my workplace I used to take French lessons with a couple of colleagues who completed their studies in Ontario. Their French was as good or bad as mine. I had never been exposed to French before the lessons.

General Education website:

Peel Education website: (If you are moving to Mississauga and Brampton)

Toronto District School Board (If you are moving to Etobicoke, Toronto, North York, East York, Scarborough and York)

Yes, well reminded by biomed to get all vaccination reports.

Plus carry all previous school transcripts. When you choose a school they would need to see a proof of your residence (a copy of your rental agreement in Canada). In Canada the schools will not refuse admission to your kin as long as you reside within a specified radius of the school.

From grade 8 to 12, it is called high schools. In canada there are various programs for high school kids

International Bacheulerate
Gifted Programs
Advanced Programs
Regular Programs
Science and Technology Programs
Art focused programs

Go the website of Toronto District School Board, Peel Region School Board or the board of the region, you are going to live. Every region and school thereunder have different programs suitable to community in their area.

Grade 8 is very important grade. Everwhere high school marks and performace is counted. In university, this will help in geeting addmision in big university.
