VANCOUVER - A new study from an Ottawa think-tank says the employment roadblocks faced by immigrants to Canada are getting worse.
The Canadian Labour and Business Centre says it takes more than 10 years before unemployment among immigrants drops to the level of Canadians born here.
That's double the time it took 20 years ago, according to the study's author.
Simon Fraser University economics professor Don Devoretz agrees with the findings. But he says there's an even bigger problem – many trained professionals find it impossible to use their skills here.
"That's a reason why many people return," he says. "About 25 per cent of the immigrants who have arrived since 1986 have returned to the country they came from because they've been discouraged basically."
The study says the economy will continue to suffer, because of this under-utilization of labour and skills of immigrants.
