Hi Ontario people,

Couple of months ago (couldn't clearly recall when), Ontario govt. introduced HST. Barring an initial hue-and-cry over it, I didn't follow anyone from Ontario ever mentioned this tax here on the board again. Now, it's BC's turn to introduce this Highly Stupid Tax. The govt. is hell bent and adamant over imposing this tax regardless of any public pressure and opposition. Well, that's their way always - esp. when we have a HSP(highly stupid Premier) in office.

Cutting the chase here, my question is simply this. How is this tax affecting you guys? Are you seeing any effect of this tax on your purchasing habits? Please share your agonies as well as pleasure (my bet there won't be any) for HST.

I can see all the provinces would soon follow suit to implement HST. Taxes, taxes, taxes, and more taxes - urggggggggh. And in these times? Hey Govt. people, are you seriously kidding?

I would really appreciate your comments for us Vancouverites to better prepare for the things to come w.r.t HST. :(

Ciao!

Febpreet,
It is being introduced in July 2010 only. Some essential items are HST Exempt.
The oNtario govt. is giving $ 1000 (before July 2010) to families earning less than $80K to offset the charges.
It will affect only very rich people, people buying lots of stuff etc...
I for one welcome it as I always tend to buy stuff which is GST/PST exempt (for the most part) or pay in cash.
Hope this helps.

Peace by TK

Febpreet did you see this article:

http://www.cbc.ca/money/story/2009/07/23/bc-hst-pst-gst.html

apparently there will be some exceptions:

Similar to the PST, consumers will see point-of-sales HST rebates on the following goods:

Gasoline and diesel fuel for motor vehicles.
Books.
Children's-sized clothing and footwear.
Children's car seats and car booster seats.
Diapers and feminine hygiene products

It seems like its being set up to benefit businesses alone.

Is Vancouver not ruled by Liberals?

HST is a rip off. What many people do not know that quite a few items which are exempt will now be covered by BOTH GST and HST. This is going to hit hard when one buys a costly item like appliances, car or other luxury goods. Apart from these items, things like Tim Coffee or other items covered by GST are going to be hit by HST. Someone has pointed out that there will be rebate of $1,000 for families earning less than 8oK. However, this is ONE time bribe to Ontarions as 2010 will be election year. Liberals know pretty well that public memory is short and hence Liberals are hopeful to come back to power on this bribe (Sound like Indian politics). At this stage it is difficult to list numerous items which will be covered by HST. However, it is emply clear that HST will boost provincial government revenue by a very large amount. Corollary is that revenue will come from our pockets. As regards not charging HST on certain items, it is nothing but a lolipop to fool people.

Nightmare, I agree with you word-by-word. HST is a biggest rip-off. And yes, Vancouver is ruled (or mis-ruled) by Liberals.

The HST exempt product/services don't really matter as they are miniscule as compared to the biggest hole in our pockets, when it comes to at least 98% products.

Unfortunately, no-one could do anything. Whom to elect and not elect - same as the politics anywhere else in the world, especially India. Appalling, really appalling.

It's sad and strange that when there are issues directly affecting us, we see no or just 24-30 people's visible protests out on the roads. My take is to hit the road in large numbers, conduct a peaceful protest, and show the Govt. that it's not acceptable at all. However and nonetheless, I can foresee the HST come in full effect and after few months everyone will forget everything. Someone once said on the Indian radio program that 'Canadian public is a cow'. Politicians know that as well, and don't spare a chance to rip-off.
