THE CANADIAN PRESS

Media reports say Ontario will join Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Quebec in banning cellphone use while driving.

CityTV and CTV report the Liberal government will introduce a bill to ban electronic distractions next Tuesday.

The reports say Transport Minister Jim Bradley will be seeking to prohibit all use of phones, BlackBerrys and GPS devices by drivers in the province.

The reports say the law will likely only apply to those behind the wheel and not passengers in the front or back seat.

Brian Patterson of the Ontario Safety League told CityTV getting drivers to go along with the law will be a challenge for police.

Previous attempts to introduce private member's bills banning cellphones have failed.

I do not think GPS use is banned anywhere in Canada/US and Ontario may become the first province to do that in the name of distraction.

Agreed.
Drivers distraced by devices are a serious danger on the highways and streets.
I have passed folks yakking away on cell phones, typing away at BBs, playing with iPods and whatnot.
It should be banned and the fines should be hefty, including points.

At the same time, I expect cell phone companies to try and influence this decision making by using stupid arguments, citing irrelevant studies and generally derail the issue.

How many of you actually believe that the use of GPS causes accidents. I believe it is a great tool and may reduce the accident chances. I am totally against banning GPS. All other devices should be banned.

GPS is the best thing every happened in the world of driving.

GPS should be seen as an entirely different breed of technology against cellphone, BB etc.., I wouldn't be playing with GPS unlike other devices.

They may not ban using GPS while driving ( note that many luxurious cars come with fixed GPS), perhaps they will protest against playing with it while driving.

Have the Liberals gone mad? What is the rationale for banning GPS? GPS is now utterly useful for so many of us as we drive around cities. If drinking coffee and eating donuts while driving is not considered illegal or distracting, what is so distracting about using GPS? And why should I be discriminated against if I am driving by myself in the car. I have as much right to reach my destination as those with passengers.

I think the proposal is to ban handheld GPS devices (like blackberries). Mounted GPS, which can be used when you pull over on the side are exempt from this proposal.

I think it does make sense. What difference does it make if you are using your BB device for texting, email or GPS, you are getting distracted (taking your eyes off the road), and putting other lives in danger.

Just my opinion.
