I have usually used the second formula in that three-part series that one of the posters mentioned for calculating the IRR.
What gummy-stuff is calling XIRR is also called personalized rate of return by the mutual funds and pensions that measure your specific annualized return.
The way to calculate XIRR is to either use products like Microsoft Money, Quicken or if you build a spreadsheet yourself you'll need to use the Excel Solver function to "solve for" the IRR.
The formula I gave further up in the thread is the same as the one this poster uses in the second example.
