Dear all

We landed in Canada in 2009 June and stayed for a week. Now we moved here and decided to stay. My husband came in Dec. 2011 and I came in Feb. 2012. He worked for 1 week in Dec. and got his T4 and is working now. I haven't started working yet.

When we enquired about tax returns we got multiple answers from the consultants. Some said we both need to file tax returns for the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. Some said only for 2011. Whom to follow?

Generally how much they charge for each tax return per person as our tax returns don't have much information to fill anyway.

Can anyone kindly give us any suggestions reg. this.

At present we are in Brampton and can you please let us know about any consultant who charges reasonable amount.

Your help is highly appreciated.

Thank you all in advance.

Regards
Sirisha.

Hi,
You need to file for every year that you were in Canada and not where you did not get an exemption from the CRA.
Filing is easy. First filing is always in paper (and not online).
There are many places where they will do the paper work and filing for free. (they will get money from the govt. for doing that). This applied only when your pay is negligible (say less than $ 20,000 a year).
Please visit your library / librarian for more news.
Also visit an immigration assisting centre.
Peace

Hi Sirisha,

Welcome to Canada.

Filing of tax returns in Canada is based on your 'Residential Status for Tax Purposes' which is guided by the 'residential ties' you have in Canada.

If you did not establish significant residential ties when you first landed in Canada, then you DO NOT have to file tax returns for the year 2009 and 2010. Your husband has to file tax return for 2011 and you would only start filing tax returns for this year onward.

You can read about this here http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/nnrsdnts/ndvdls/nwcmr-eng.html and you will get answers to your questions. However, if you determine that you did establish ties when you landed in 2009 then you would have to file tax returns from 2009 onward and declare your worldwide income, meaning what ever income you had in your home country, that needs to be declared and taxes paid in Canada. You will get credit for the taxes paid in your home country (I am assuming India as India and Canada have tax treaty).

You can go to any tax clinic or simply can do it yourselves for your husband for the year 2011 and it can be done free of cost by doing it online at some websites which offer free tax preparation for people under certain income threshold but the return has to be printed and you have to do a paper filing.

Should you have any questions, you can PM me or call and I can guide you accordingly.

What Pramod said is obsolutly right..

You only need to file for 2011, earlier years you dont need to file. I did the same thing in when i landed and left the same day in 2003 and returned in 2006.. i did not file returns for the in between years..
