Thanks for clarifying that.. seems like core french is like a second language learnt in an English medium school.
French immersion is differenent.. grade 1 is completely french... children are literally "immersed" into a french environment with a lot of encouragement and fun thrown in. Grade two onwards English is introduced as a language taught within the curriculum. Grade 3 onwards the subjects are split between french and english. In Grade 4 for example, days of the week are split .. alternating between one day French instruction and one day English. The French instruction day would be split into periods such as social sciences, art, langauge (grammar/writing/reading) all in French. During the English instruction day the day is split into periods like Math, English language reading/writing etc all in English. I believe the 50% split between French and English continues upto the end of school. So the main difference would be that the children become truly bilingual as they are talking, reading, writing French as a tool to learn other subjects as opposed to learning the language as a second language (with perhaps less proficiency).
Hope this helps,

Core French is when French is taught as a subject, in Peel it is grade 4 to 8, 40 minutes a day; Waterloo it is grade 1 to 9; Toronto it is grade 1 to 4, 20 minutes a day and grade 5 to 8, 30 minutes a day.

Here is a contarian view on the French immersion system. Just so that we can balance the discussion

Well, this is a very old debate. At least in my son's school the kids are from regular middle class families. I do not see many parents driving fancy SUV's. We are friends with a few families in his school and all are a typical middle class family. I do not find anything elite about FI. Any one can get into FI and I have not seen any discrimination. Culling - FI is a bit more demanding than regular and any child who cannot cope up is asked to reconsider. In my sons school only one child dropped out and that too not because the school asked to.

I agree with Iceberg and have similar experiences. A lot of families in my child's school are working class/middle class where both parents work to have a comfortable (Not lavish) lifestyle.
