TIRUMALA: With a view to addressing the social problems in Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe localities, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has decided to build Sri Venkateswara Multipurpose Temples (SVMPTs) in such colonies across the State.

The TTD Trust Board, which met here today, decided to sanction Rs 5 lakh, besides providing a site, to each SVMPT after completion of prescribed formalities on the part of the colony concerned.

TTD chairman DK Audikesavulu Naidu, briefing the media on the decisions taken at the meeting, said: ``There was overwhelming response from the people to Govinda Kalyanam which concluded in Visakhapatnam district today. It will begin in Anantapur tomorrow. It was the innumerable requests from tribals and rural folk for construction of temples which led to the TTD envisaging the SVMPTs.’’

The Trust Board had approved the recommendations of the purchase committee and works committee, he said, and added that the board sanctioned Rs 35 lakh for purchase of medicines for a year for the benefit of patients in the TTD Ayurvedic Hospital.

It also sanctioned Rs 10 lakh each as grant to SV Natya Kala Parishad and Akshaya Kshetram near Tirupati, while Rs 20 lakh was sanctioned for renovation of an ancient temple at Pedaparu in Krishna district and Rs 5 lakh for Thyagaraya Aradhanotsavalu in Tiruvarur in Tamil Nadu.

It had decided to write to the government for allocation of 150 acres in Surappakasam, 150 acres in Ramireddypalle and 130 acres in Mangalam, near Tirupati, for allotment of house sites to its employees, as the TTD lacked land of its own for the purpose.

The meeting also resolved to celebrate the quincentenary of the coronation of Sri Krishnadevaraya on a grand scale, jointly with the State Cultural Academy.

The programme was discussed with cultural secretary Kantha Rao and finalised. The board also decided to revise the health insurance scheme for retired TTD employees.
