Superbug on the prowl in India, UK scientists warn of worldwide spread
AP, Aug 11, 2010, 03.46pm IST

LONDON: British scientists have found a superbug that is resistant to most antibiotics and are warning that it is widespread in India and could soon appear worldwide.

The superbug has so far been identified in 37 people who returned to the UK after undergoing surgery in India or Pakistan.

In an article published online Wednesday in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases, doctors reported finding a new gene, called NDM-1. The gene alters bacteria, allowing them to become resistant to nearly all known antibiotics. It has been seen largely in E. coli bacteria, the most common cause of urinary tract infections, and on DNA structures that can be easily copied and passed onto other types of bacteria.

The researchers said the superbug appeared to be already circulating widely in India, where the health system is much less likely to identify its presence or have adequate antibiotics to treat patients.

The potential of NDM-1 to be a worldwide public health problem is great, and coordinated international surveillance is needed,'' the authors wrote. Aside from the U.K., the resistant gene has also been detected in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, the U.S. and Sweden. The researchers said that since many Americans and Europeans travel to India and Pakistan for elective procedures like cosmetic surgery, it was likely the superbug would spread worldwide.

``The spread of these multi-resistant bacteria merits very close monitoring,'' wrote Johann Pitout of the division of microbiology at the University of Calgary, Canada, in an accompanying commentary.

Pitout called for international surveillance of the bacteria, particularly in countries that actively promote medical tourism. ``The consequences will be serious if family doctors have to treat infections caused by these multi-resistant bacteria on a daily basis.''

When you say 'THEY" are you talking about India or Indians, right? Because medical community in India is responsible for this mess, and people all over world saw it coming. They way Indian population is consuming antibiotics (including higher doses) this was going to happen sooner or later.

Now because of this, India is going to suffer for sure but world community is also going to suffer, because those idiots were prescribing antibiotics carelessly and even pharmacies were dispensing antibiotics without any prescriptions.

And as far as medical tourism is concern, if you do some research..... you will find that majority of patient were sent to India from Europe and America by insurance companies to save money. You will see how this problem is going to haunt insurance companies;)

It won't. Those buggers are too clever for that.
Insurance companies do not cover claims and expenses for sickness caused because of traveling abroad to a place infected by mass outbreak of a disease like the bird flu (H1N1) or the swine flu or whatever else.
These days most plans have exclusion clauses for these.
So their position will be even if we told you to go abroad for medical treatment, the decision is yours and you took the risk by traveling to this place and now it is not covered.

I know this is off the topic...but what a contradictory and funny statement...what is the use of them gettting better if the crash is imminent.

As per the superbug....well till there is a vaccine/remedy it always is a superbug, be it sars, h1n1, plague or HIV. A win win for both insurance and medical tourism industry. Litte contraversy and then capitalizing on fame.

Win-Win? People will start flocking to India to get superbug?

If this is played right, see how the controversy can be turned into opportunity for medical toursim and how insurance companies can capitalize on it. Lets mark and revisit this post after a year, I say that if this contraversy grows for another month or two, it will be good for both medical tourism in India and insurance companies.
