Hi all, I am looking to get some more understanding and working knowledge for Microsoft dynamics (formerly known as GP). I do not have an accounting background but do have IT experience ( a little). I am needing assistance for the below mentioned two items

1. Where can i get training material for Microsoft Dynamics (cost effective solution)

2. Is it worth it for me to even think about getting to learn MS dynamics particularly if i do not have accounting background ? This tool is quite in demand but does require accounting background.

3. Should i need to develop a good understanding of accounting field, what kind of courses should i do to get basic and good understanding of the accounting principles ?

All help is much appreciated.

Thank You

It's still called GP or Great Plains but Micro$oft want you to call it dynamics GP. Microsoft dynamics are whole range of business software solutions from Microsoft that inludes dynamics GP, CRM, AX, NAV, and more.

The most cost effective way to learn dynamics GP would be through CustomerSource membership. You need to work for a company that uses the product or for a Microsoft dynamics partners to get access to their online traning materials.

Depends on your plan. You can learn GP client/server architechture, installation/configuration & administration without needing any accounting backgrd and land on a good job.

Yes, if you plan to work on implementation or in accounting field. You need the same basic principals of accounting whether you use dynamics GP or other accounting packages.

Thank You Luckysaab for the valuable advise. I have researched and am getting stuck where i need to find a company that uses GP / Dynamics and i guess that would be the greatest challenge. Even though i am (sort of desperate) to learn it as i am sure i can find employment if i get some understandting of this tool, There are not many resource (cost effective) available out there other than the one you listed which will provide with more practical training.

Just wondering if i should try an apply to volunteer at certain companies that use this application and see if i can get in ? Any other advise ?

Thanks again :)

Voluteering is one possible way. The other cheaper way would be to find a deal on Microsoft Technect subscription. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/subscriptions/buy.aspx" target="_blank">http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/subscriptions/buy.aspx</a>
Once in a while Microsoft runs promotion up to 75% off for new subscribers. When you subscribe you get access to all range of Microsoft software including OS, Databases, and other enterprise software like Sharepoint, dynamics GP and others for one year. You can download and install in your home workstation and learn that way. Once you download and activate it will not expire even after your subscription expire. Also Dynamics GP comes with a sample company database with full blown chart of accounts that make it very easy to learn.

Hi luckysaab

how demanding is MS Dynamics really? is this any match to SAP? usually when I hear about ERP I mostly hear about SAP - not much MS Dynamics. Any comment?

It depends but it's pretty simple and stable microsoft-like system. I'm not sure how Dynamics measure up to SAP but it's rapidly gaining market share within small and mid-size companies in the US because it's cheaper and have tighter integration with Microsoft tools and technologies such as SQL Server, Sharepoint, and Microsoft Office.

Not many people are in it now and there are some very good jobs out there looking for people with MS Dynamics knowledge and experience. Ministry of Health is using MS Dynamics across Ontario for their own hospital based systems.

I guess there is a supply issue out there with people who have good understanding of Ms Dynamics. As there isn't much competition, i guess its not that bad of a skill to have under your belt.

Lucky saab - you seem to be quite knowledgeable avenue, would you like to share if you have experience with dynamics and if yes - how did you go about to get it ?

Thanks
