Dear All,
I plan to move to Canada in July 2011. I am a banker with 14+ years of experience in the middle east & India of which 5 years are with Citibank .I currently hold the title of Manager-Collections & Recoveries Home loans. Do I need to do an exam /course to qualify to work in a bank in Canada? What would be the average salary a banker could draw in these circumstances
Awaiting your responses
Thanks

Hi Moving to Canada
Banking is a regulated industry in Canada. You need to complete your mutual fund course - IFIC or CSC for entry into a branch based sales position.
Salary is in the range of 35,000 CAD

Thanks Lali for your reply, however I was looking at a back end position & not in sales & not in the branch
Is the course compulsory then too? If so would you have more details about it. Am currently based in the ME. Is it possible for me to complete the course here before moving there permanantly
Thanks....

Hi Moving to Canada
I give herewith my personal experience:
I am not aware whether back end positions are easily available. I have noticed that people enter through the branch network and then move within the bank.
Most back end positions in the bank are filled by recruits from agencies who are on the rolls of the agencies. Subsequently the candidates try to move into the bank directly. Pay too is relatively low.
If you think your experience in collections and recoveries can be put to use here, a basic requirement will be to have language skills - English and French.
Even for back end positions like tele mutual fund reps you need these courses. You can read about these courses on CSI website. However, completing these courses do not guarantee a job, it gives you an edge over the other candidates in the job market.
Hope this helps.

Thanks again!

Hi "Moving to Canada",
CSC is not a mandatory requirement if you wish to get into positions with the banks which do not have any linkage to sales. However CSC can help you to get into in first place and then you can move laterally within the bank you get into your desired profiles by applying internally.
Good luck.

From your posting it is hard to understand your profile . May I suggest that you be open to accepting any job here rather than looking for a like for like job?
Like other readers suggested, there are 5 major banks, and the best strategy is to get into a branch and work your way up. Remember, "getting into a branch" is a feat by itself.
Most back end positions are either filled through campus recruitment, lateral moves or internal promotions.
Assuming you are between 35-40 you may be looking at:
-- temp jobs initially, factory floor, shop floor etc - $10-$12 per hour, 15-30 hours a week - 6-18 months
-- back end office jobs - $30,000 - $35,000 per year 6-18 months
at this point you may be able to move to non-bank office jobs.
Sounds grim, but if you can survive through it it may be worth every effort is immigration is what matters to you most.
