I actually feel that in the present day and age, Jagjit Singh is the ultimate God of Ghazals whose range includes modern, sufi, poetry, Ghalib, to name a few.
These self-styled purists really don't get that it was Jagjit Singh due to whom Ghazal is being appreciated and enjoyed by much of the mainstream audience. Without him, it would've died decades ago with Begum Akhtar, Talat Mahmood, and Rafi. So, the credit should go to Jagjit and Jagjit alone.
As for Ranjit Rajwada, he really needs to work hard coupled with creating his own brand/style (rather than blindly imitating Ghulam Ali) alongwith the quality content to become successful. Ask him to sing a song by leaving his harmonium and he looks fainted.
There are hoardes of singers being mass produced by small screen these days that you don't know who is singing what and when. Gone are the days of 3-4 successful and quality singers. Other than KK, Shaan, Lucky Ali, Shreya, and Sunidhi , you can hardly figure out any singers these days. New crop of female singers is even worst, where every Sita, Gita, or Papita sound hoarse. Quality singers such as Kavita Krishnamurthy and Chitra are not singing much these days and greatly missed.

I sail same I-Adore-Jagjit Boat, which sure is huge.
I don't know who are those purists - but must be blind n deaf. Two ways to look at it. I heard Ghulam Ali n Begam Akhtar after falling in love with Ghazals because of Jagjit. If it was not for Jagjit - I am not sure I would have heard or bought others.
Yes, emphasis should be on poetry. If purists wants poetry then poetry is one of the good reasons that Jagjit stands out up n above everyone else in the genre. Try coming up with Jagjit/Chitra Top 50. It won't be about what to include but what to exclude.
I am thankful to him for bringing Ghazal to mainstream. I miss Chitra Singh though.

But you all are missing one name in Ghazals " MAESTRO- MEHDI HASSAN". I started my jounrey of listening to Ghazals from Jagjit Singh, then moved to Hariharan,Ghulam Ali, Begam Akshtar etc and finally settled down at MEHDI HASSAN. He is just amazing.
