Steve Jobs and his old "buddy" Bill Gates present an interesting comparative study of management style and corporate growth.
It cannot be argued that both MSFT and APPL have been excellent companies in last 15 - 20 years.
It cannot also be denied that both these guys are extremely brilliant and one of the best minds of our generation.
However, their styles have been entirely different.
While Bill Gates has managed to separate himself from the day to day direction and operations of MSFT, Steve is still heavily involved.
I believe Apple is heavily dependent on Steve, unlike Microsoft.
Bill Gates is now merely a branding thing for Microsoft - the vision, direction, operations and sustainability of the company is independent of Bill.
Microsoft has managed to transform itself into a consumer goods company, from a purely technological growth company.
Apple is still very much a niche and loyalty driven company.
Who knows what'll happen to Apple after Steve, if he's not able to survive for long.

It would be a great loss if Steve Jobs passed away, I really hope he makes it through the latest bout of his illness and comes back to do what he does best. Just like BillG, the man is a living legend, the world needs more of what his vision has to offer.

I agree though, Apple would hardly be the same without him. He is Apple, I don't know of any other successful companies where the CEO is synonymous with the brand..

Dr Gabe Mirkin a physician with supposedly 40 years of experience told the tabloid, "He is terminal. What you are seeing is extreme muscle wasting from calorie depravation, most likely caused by cancer. He has no muscle left in his buttocks, which is the last place to go."

"He definitely appears to be in the terminal stages of his life from these photos. I would be surprised if he weighed more than 130lb," Mirkin reportedly told the tabloid.

Jobs' battle with cancer started in 2004 and he reportedly went to Switzerland in 2009 to undergo a rare radiology treatment.

Wall Street Journal reported that Jobs also had a secret liver transplant in Memphis.
