Here are some observations from a "dude" brought up in Canada.
Right upto the late 90's I did not like to be associated with Indians as I did not see any accomplishments by them that were worldly recognised.
The only Indian that came to mind was The MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) professor Bose who made speakers bearing his name very famous.
Ever since Sabeer Bhatia hit the scene and many others in the IT field made it big in the States, I have been proud to say I am of Indian origin.
I am a media communications major. When I joined college, everybody talked about Ted Turner, Rupert Murdoch, Kerry Packer, Ken Thompson and the like. I decided instead to make Subhash Chandra (founder and boss of Zee TV) my hero and wrote a paper on him that got top marks and was published in a popular Canadian media mag.
Now we have Lakhsmi Mittal (Metal as some call him due to the steel background he has) as no.3 in the world.
What I am trying to say is that only because of India's and Indians' accomplishments recently that I am proud to say I am Indian. Had certain Indians not made the grade, I would still be ashamed to be known as Indian. You might consider it dumb, but that's me.
So a toast to Bose, Sabeer Bhatia, Narayan Murthy, Azim Premji, Vinod Khosla, Deepak Chopra, Amartya Sen, Dhirubai Ambani, Swaraj Paul, Laksmi Mittal and a host of others and of course my personal favourite, Subhash Chandra.

grt to hear from you guys.
grt to know that ppl agree that there is a need now to contribute towards India Shining!
We `ve always had a lot to offer to the world but never had enough grit in ourselves to shout out loud.
Now that there are so many important and shining Indian faces all around the world, let us not hide our INDIANESS. Instead let it shine.
I hope the time comes soon when we wont be embarrased to use all our INdianisms in public.
hurrah to that!
I hope IM not being too optimistic.

At a given time not everyone will have a bad mood. If you smile at ten people, I doubt if two will also reciprocate!!
A few Indianisms around already like guru, pundit, chai. What others would you like to be seen? I am sure there are many, but please bring them to mind.
I remember reading that many Hinglish words were incorporated into the Oxford dictionary recently, but I can't remember which. Can you guys fill me in?
My good Mumbai friend uses " bindaas" "raag" (as in spinning a tall tale) "waat" ( as used in Munnabai MBBS) and many others I can't bring to mind. Are these generally used or they Mumbai slang?
Since I am in media- another Indian name very much dropped is Manoj Knight Shyamalan of Sixth Sense fame- amazing guy.
Also the chess champ Anand and golf champ Vijay Singh- though I think he is from Fiji.

just imagine,
a time will come when we dont have to hide behind angelisized names.
satish becomes steve and so on.(and we dont mind it in fact we like it)
our ladies can go about doing their jobs in sarees and be proud of wearing(im not saying that trousers are no good)
theres an altercation or a bit of a scuffle between an indian immigrant and a canadian and and the indian is not forced (by his ownself) to keep quiet and lie low.
another observation
a no. of indians already settled here take advantage of the new immigrants
I got a job at an indian rest. and worked whole day like a donkey and said `thank you, i wont come to work tomorrow`, knowing that it is not meant for me; the owner, the asshole refused to pay my days salary.
i know frm a alot of ppl that working with an indian employer fetches you much less as they know u have no alternative.
